I was so disappointed with how they handled the Rita character just before killing her off that they'll have a lot to make up for in this new season.

There were times when I was really annoyed by Rita because she was so naggy, but I don't know if I like the idea of Dexter as a single parent.

I thought it was poor writing as well. I think the ending of the season would have been more dramatic if they had kept Rita's character true to how she was prior to the last season. In season one they lay out the reason Dexter is with Rita is because she's a battered woman, the abused ex-wife of a heroin addict, a now single mother with low self esteem so she has very lowered expectations. I think the Rambo movie was probably her high point theatrically, it's all been downhill from there.

I'm just guessing at what might have happened, haven't read anywhere if she wanted out or not, but if it was her choice she made a bad move. Dexter by far was the best thing she had going.
