No sign of 3 Utah men on Arizona treasure hunt

PHOENIX ? Rescue workers unsuccessfully searched a rugged Arizona wilderness area for a third day in triple-digit temperatures for three Utah men who went missing while looking for the legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine.

By late Tuesday night, authorities said there still was no sign of the three men from Salt Lake City. The men have been in the Superstition Mountains since at least Sunday and possibly nearly a week, Maricopa County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Jesse Spurgin said. They were last heard from on June 6.

Curtis Meriworth, 67, Ardean Charles, 62, and Malcolm Meeks, 51, planned on hiking into the mountains and exploring the area about 40 miles east of Phoenix during the day and spending nights in a motel, Spurgin said.

Rest of the story:
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/...rscrgD9GUJOKG0

I hope they find these guys, but it is not looking good. This area is rally tough and rugged, if you are not familiar with this place it would be wise to stay out or at least go some what prepared and from the sound of it they were not at all prepared.
I heard one of the guys was rescued a few years back and almost lost his life.....would think that might have been a warning for him to be a bit educated about the area before he took 2 more friend back for a treasure hunt.

There are a few stagnate pools of water back in there if they have not dried up and at Reeves Ranch there are springs, and you would need tablets to purify the water for drinking purposes?? sometimes the springs put out little water if none, in the summer.

Lets hope they make it out, but with temps at 115, their chances diminish. I have been 20 miles back in there and it was ruthless and dangerous, if you don't know what you are doing, you are screwed.

If you decide to visit Arizona in the summer, be prepared and know the area you are going hiking into...

Winter months are the best months to venture back into this place. At least you can do things to keep warm, but dealing with extreme heat and no water is a losing situation.

From what I understand they went in with minimal water, but what they did not realize is in this heat you need more than a canteen or a water bottle and you better have a backup plan to reach any water sources.

Then again, they could have stumbled onto someones claim and got shot, who knows.

They have already used blood hounds and no luck. I don't think they fell in any mines, all the mines in the area are all tunneled, not shafts ;)

I have been indoors for the last few days and I'm still dehydrated. It's way too hot to be outside without water. Like Baddog said, they're dead unless they found shade and a water supply.

With decisions like that it's a miracle they lived long enough (51,62,67) to die like this.

"If you decide to visit Arizona in the summer, be prepared and know the area you are going hiking into..."
~ That's it in a nutshell Nikki ~

Summer hikers need to beware. I even had a bit of a set back during a Spring desert bloom hike 3 years ago. During the Summer arid heat salt and H2O loss is quickly debilitating and it's very sneaky. You don't know it's coming until it's gotcha by the ass. Seriously, you can feel fit and fine 1 minute and be out of body/mental control the next.

Winter is not such a big deal though, it happens quite often. The Mesa FD rescue guys have to deal with most of the dumb asses. They are forced to wear full turn-out gear when doing so. Then there's the 70+ yr old snowbirds who try to climb Superstition and twist their ankle. THEN, they require (actually demand) Class AAA rescue to carry their fat ass down the mountain side they should never have been on to begin with.

Snowbirds can be almost (not quite) as expensive as illegal fuckin' immigrates sometimes.

< rant >
The snowbirds do pay Federal taxes for the most part but are too old to have munchkins clogging up our schools and health care facilities. Many many many claim permanent residence here (AZ) just to tap into our AHCCCS system though.

Am I prejudice? ... ummm ... well ... not really ...
I'm just against tax money sucking, mind numbing, job stealing, resource draining, property encroaching, "poor me", intentional anchor baby bearing, no visa, no passport, border hopping illegal thieving fucking immigrants. If I suspect you I will report you immediately to the authorities, if I hear about you I will report you immediately to the authorities, if I'm not sure I will report you immediately to the authorities.

I'm also against tax money sucking, mind numbing, job stealing, resource draining, property encroaching, "poor me everybody else does it", intentional tax evading, tax cheating employers who actively search for anchor baby bearing, no visa, no passport, border hopping illegal thieving fucking immigrants. If I suspect you I will report you immediately to the authorities, if I hear about you I will report you immediately to the authorities, if I'm not sure I will report you immediately to the authorities.

What a bunch of F U C K S.

Take your anchor babies and go home. I know it's not their (your offspring's) fault, you're just a deadbeat wannabe. However, it is certainly not our (honest US citizen taxpayers) burden either.

Oh wait, maybe El Presidente Calderón will provide you the same benefits of US citizenship?

They would be real lucky to find any water because they are not familiar with the region. If they had any of survival skills they could get water from cactus and the place is loaded with them.
And If they happened to take the trail that leads to the outlet of canyon lake, then they would find some water, but chances are they are just plain ass lost.

Ever tried digging a hole and lining it with plastic or similar to collect condensation in a cone shape down to cup, does that work?

I can't imagine it would be enough.

It does work, but I doubt they took anything along that they might be able to use to accomplish that, hence the reason I mentioned cactus, it doesn't taste too good but it beats dehydrating and then dying.

Still no sign of these guys

Maybe search and rescue should start looking for buzzards circling as that is a good sign of something big that has died.

Maybe today will bring some good news

Unfortunately, I have a feeling they are dead.

I don't think you can get reception back in the superstitions and this whole thing has got me thinking too.

1) Either this is some sort of cute prank which will go wrong for them if in fact it is.

2) They found an old mine and all of them went in (not leaving anyone outside to seek help, if needed) and the mine collar caved in, trapping all of them inside.

3) They found one of many caverns went in and got lost. The chance of finding one of these are real slim as they are not marked on any maps and have vegetation that has grown over the entrance which almost makes it impossible to see.

You would think if they died out in the sun or open, the buzzards would be flying circling by the dozens and that would be one thing I would think rescuers would look for after so many days.

I couldn't agree with you more. If one of these guys had to be resuced on a previous trip, wouldn't you think he would overcompensate by carrying a shitload of water, satellite phones and food? Something here doesn't add up.

Hope they make it out ok

They should have taken a satellite phone with them. They are not that expensive these days unless you make a lot of calls and they would have only needed to make 1 call!

I guess that would work.

I would not go in there without a compass and a topo map and being prepared. A simple day hike is no big deal, but who knows where these guys took off to....
