is this how some adult sites have worked?

    1. get webmasters to promote your site that sells for $5 but you pay webmasters $30. But in the members area you have links to loads of sites so you make $$$$ in upsells. So if that webmaster who sent you the sales promotes other sites, hard luck as the customers will have signed up already.

    2. You get everyone to sign up to a newsletter. After a few years you close your affiliate site down and just send out newsletters.

    3. You set up an affiliate syatem and spend $$$ on it. Everyone says its great and promotes it. You spend your cash on cars and stuff. You forget that you have affiliates to pay as well as your huge tax bill. You end up not able to pay affiliates. You close the affiliate site though your still happy for them to send sales.

    4. You get a huge loan, employ loads of people. Your a big shot. Your going to be rich. After a few months, you blow all the cash and find that having no business experience you go belly up. But at least for a few months you could be the big shot and tell people your bigger than playboy.

      it just feels like that.

i keep reading posts from 'the next big thing'.

everyone says, wow, great, cool, and rushes out to promote.

a few months later and they shut up doors, then the same people moan that the firms have shut. thing is surly they must have a clue that even if you bring in sales that unless the sites make a vast amount, they will go belly up quick.

in manchester (UK) there was a record lable (see the film 24hr party people). they made a record that the sleeve was so expensive that they made a loss of somthing like 4p on each sale. many in this biz remind me of it.

          yes

          and no contracts too.

it reminds me of some solo sites where the model turns out not to be exclusive and goes off and does shoots with other sites.

                          It doesn't work like that.

The customer is upselled to all those sites without even knowing it.

Nothing wrong with standard (not 1 click forced) upsells. It is the members choice to click and purchase. The affiliate should not get any of that money.

If affiliates want a true 50% or whatever they beg for these days, they can also help pay for the companies expenses. Otherwise, expect the company do have things like upsells.

Factory Records and the single was Blue Monday by New Order although the fancy sleeve was only on the first run pressed. I think they probably still made nothing personally from it though as the profit will have gone into running The Haçienda.
