Carpet because the UK isn't exactly a hot country plus you can wander about in socks without slipping on it.

Got heated tiles in the bathroom. Whole house has actually got nice oak floors but I much prefer it carpeted.

Hardwood ftw

Good soft carpet in the bedroom is nice. Hardwood floors in most of the rest of the place. That is my ideal...

I was a tiler, I know how little heated floors cost & if done right they can be effective. However, to get out of bed & have a nice carpet to walk on is nicer than a hard floor, whether wood or tiles.

I'm a carpet kind of person. We have 95% of our basement in carpet (minus bar area and laundry room) and upstairs is split 50/50 pretty much. I prefer carpet, I'd rather vaccum than sweep/mop

hardwood throughout, stone in the kitchen and bathroom. you don't want hardwood anywhere there's a lot of water.

For most homes, but for a Craftsman house, it's very common for Hardwood in the Kitchen and Bathrooms.

My personal homes, I agree. Stone in Kitchen and Bathrooms, carpet in bedrooms and hardwood in living, dining and hallways.

What do you prefer in your bedrooms?

Thanks

By the way, neglected to ask. Is this a Craftsman design or is it a Sears house or both? I'm very much interested in old houses and buildings and actually have a Lustron all steel two bedroom home. It's entirely dismantled and on pallets but all there and in one of the barns so it's out of the weather. Got it for hauling it off! I mean I got it for paying some guys to haul it off for me!

Lustron:

Lustron structures go together like an Erector set or kind of like Legos. One of my pet projects.

Sally.

hardwood always returns the investment, is neutral relative to prospective buyers' tastes. Only drawback is if you have a dog, they do a number on them running around the house

I have hardwood on both floors and never get the cold feeling......

Had tile throughout in FL and MX and loved it but here in the midwest USA its carpet everywhere but the kitchen and baths. Carpet deadens the noise / echo and in my humble opinion softer & warmer on the feet. And if you have dogs... they can destroy hardwoods in no time.

Our hose is hardwood through out except in the bathrooms where it's tiles with under floor heating. Will do the kitchen soon in tiles as well soon, wood soaks up every spill and condensation no matter how well you insulate it and then it starts to bend.

baddog 07-17-2010 10:38 AM

Carpets in bedrooms for me, because yes, it does get cold once in a while.

dogs would mess up carpet easier than hardwood. if your floors are getting scratched from a dog you should get some more dense wood with a high jank rating (http://tinytimbers.com/janka.htm). if your floors are scratched you can screen them with a buffer and put down a new coat of polyurethane very cheap.

I love heated ceramic or stone floor tiles. Hardwood and softwood is nice too, got oak and fir floors where I live now. Fixed carpet is disgusting. Natural textile rugs on tile or hardwood/softwood floors is nice, just make sure you got a great vacuum cleaner with HEPA filters.

poncabare 07-18-2010 05:56 PM

hardwood

No it will feel quality.
"Hardwood throughout" is a selling point realtors put in their comments on the MLS.
so do hardwood throughout and some area rugs for warmth in the bedrooms.

Jim_Gunn 07-18-2010 08:33 PM

Hardwood for sure, carpet is gross even if it looks superficially clean. Tile is more popular here in FL, and hardwood elsewhere, but I would never put a square inch of nasty carpet in any house I was buying.

One inch red shag..the chicks really dig that sort of thing
