Do we want domains seen as Property ?

Looks like we're about to find out whether they will or not, thanks to Gary Kremen over the sex.com case.

Whats all the fuss about this sex.com domain? Come onnnnnn, not THAT many people type it in everyday, and even so, its a type in, a short shot chance of something. Whatever, aside from the domain bein as plain jane as the next guy (IMHO), I think the fag who stole it deserves everything coming to him.

Fuckin thief,fuck him.

Well in my "experienced" estimation around 60,000 do and thats *without* any promotion. Now before they turned it into an SE, it was a horrible looking site that wouldnt have converted on a lifer who felt his last pussy as he popped out of his moms womb.

On the other hand, if it was a babe of a site - 60k daily is way more than enough to start the ball rolling. I mean sheesh sex.com is a pretty targetted domain.

Even if he converted 1/500 thats still $4200 daily on a $35/sign and around $1.5 million per year. Thats WITHOUT any promotion or even retention for that matter.

Domain names should be registered like business names.
When I owned GO Faster (bicycle shop) I registered it with Companies House. That meant that no one else in the UK could use that name in relation with cycles and equipment. It costs more to register it world wide.

Maybe a similar system could be implemented with domains? I'm not sure - but I know that after paying for a name, building traffic, registering with search engines and the rest, I consider that domain 'my property'.

do you think they have only 60k daily ???
hmm, I don't know if I am permitted to share with you these figures, but since the sex.com support wasn't sufficient helpful to me, I think I can post it here:

"Advertising at sex.com is an interactive process. We cannot guarantee any amount of traffic, but we can tell you that we get 200,000 users per day that type in sex.com, and another 300,000 impressions from these and other sources of traffic including other search listings. "

so it's nice traffic indeed

That'd be nice. I've already gone to bat with dickheads trying to hijack my shit. Justice would be sweet.

No, im well aware they do more than that.

But my estimation is that if they hadnt built any partnerships and hadnt promoted the site at all. ie just pointed the url at a sponsor, theyd be doing around 60k daily just off type-ins alone.

I think I read kremen quote that someplace but I have to say it tallies with my type-in numbers. Ive tried to buy a domain that was doing 20k daily type-in traffic (and it was a lot less potent than sex.com).

Its shame so many of those type-ins are now gone..... to ruthless bastards like oingo domain park and fuckin ultimate search. Whats the deal with those people.
