Legendary New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died last night after suffering a "massive" heart attack.According to multiple reports, Steinbrenner -- who turned 80-years-old on July 4th -- was rushed to St. Joseph's hospital in Tampa where he was later pronounced dead.

Steinbrenner -- a U.S. Navy veteran -- retired from running the Yankees in 2006 ... leaving his sons Hank and Hal to run the team.

Since Steinbrenner took over the team in 1973, the Yankees locked up 11 pennants and 7 World Series titles.

Among Steinbrenner's many accomplishments -- his famous "grooming policy" ... in which players and coaches are not allowed to sport hair past their collar ... and the only acceptable facial hair is a mustache.

Update:
A rep for the Steinbrenner family has released a statement saying, "It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He passed away this morning in Tampa, Fla., at age 80."

The rep adds, "Funeral arrangements will be private. There will be an additional public service with details to be announced at a later date."

I predict a a big event at yankee stadium and possible "parade" in nyc and/or "George Steinbrenner Day" declared in ny with every serious yankee fan taking that day off to watch baseball for the rest of there lives(including me)

He was the man I loved to hate (as a Braves fan).

He may have been that man everyone loved to hate, but he did what it took to win games and championships. Sure, he may have "bought" them, but he still managed to do it. He always put his money where his mouth was and was always worthy of respect.

I worked in one of his Hotels when I was a kid and met him on a few occasions.. He could be a real dick but at the same time he always said hello to the little guys.

While I have never liked the Yankees I always respected Steinbrenner. He put his money where his mouth was and he always did everything in his power to put a good, winning team on the field for he fans.

Steinbrenner had Alzheimer's I think - nobody had seen much of him over the past 5 years.
Fixing his heart would have just prolonged a long sad end for him.

one of those larger than life characters, a dick and a bully, but colorful characters make the world more interesting. he'll be missed.

he also did a lot of good things besides making the Yankees the Yankees again - people who are young have no idea how far off the map the Yankees had fallen before Steinbrenner bought them. Nobody went to their games, they were horrible. He paid some incredibly low price for them. Now they're worth well over a billion dollars.

brought the yankees back from the cellars of losing, to a top 3 franchise in the world value wise. first owner to get his own cable network going to broadcast his team. put his money where his mouth was in wanting to "win". most teams would be as fortunate to have as sharp an owner not only business wise, but also in the desire to put the best product he could on the field.
