What you have described is called 'Slavery'. Best case, if the almighty government "gives them a job", it could be called 'Communism'.

Work for Welfare isn't really a new concept. It's been tried up here in Canada and I imagine, has been tried there before.

I for one am all for it. If you are able to work, you should not be collecting a check from Welfare.

Shit happens, most have had to pull a check here or there over their lifespans, but anyone on it for a few months, should be sent to work. If they cannot work (medical, mental, whatever), they shouldn't be on welfare but should be on disability.

If you want to work, there is always ALWAYS a job for you.

Hahaha I definitely wouldn't consider this "slavery" as you're actually working for pay... The same thing is done in the military with housing and food...

However I would consider taxation a form of slavery hands down... 35% of the time I work for the US government and my money goes places I couldn't agree less with. THIS is forced labor.

Simple way to avoid paying taxes = don't work for money.

That is kinda like the Public Works programs which helped lift the US out of the Great Depression. I think a lot of people, who would not want to be on welfare, would want to do Public Works. Probably vice-versa too, but a lot of homeless people don't beg and we shouldn't have people with no place to go.

Learn you some history.

As it is, assistance and welfare were never designed to be 'give people to people too fucking lazy to work and good at manipulation'.

Much cheaper to drown them.

There are several states that have very similar programs although they don't require you to work for the government. In many of these states if you want to receive your food stamps, welfare and housing assistance you have to hold a full time job. The state will often help you get this job and will even transport you to the job if you need it. If you don't work, you don't get your welfare.

While it does at least get people to work it has its potential problems. For example, if you get a raise and start making more, they reduce the amount of government help you can get. Often this reduction is far more than the raise you get. I saw a documentary on poverty a while back and in it a woman who had 5 kids and was on welfare had a job that offered her a promotion. The promotion would give her an additional $300 per month. The problem was that money bumped her up a category for welfare so she would lose $500 per month in welfare so it made more sense for her to turn down the promotion.

So many of these people find little incentive to get off the welfare even when they are working.

I would like to see us send some of these people to school for 2 year associate programs. Get them an eduction that can help them land a decent paying job that has a future so they can break the cycle of poverty. If mom has 3 kids and is on welfare, chances are her kids will end up on welfare (especially if they are girls) and her having a shitty low paying job does little to change that. I would rather see tax dollars going towards helping people better themselves over the course of a few years than to just pay them to watch TV for 18 year or more.

People able to work should be required to work. Your plan does not allow for the people who are handicapped or mentally insane (which happen to be a very high percentage of the homeless). When a person can not differentiate a fork from a telephone... best of luck putting them to work.

Btw - we already provide food, heat and shelter for every convicted criminal (whether they work or not) and many have life sentences ... which run longer than most people stay on social assistance. So the message is, lets pay for people who damage our society... but not pay for people who simply lack aptitude but choose not to become criminals?

I think you would find that most homeless people are mentally ill. At least that seems to be the case here in Vancouver. Mentally ill people are generally unemployable. No one wants to go through the grocery store checkout with the methed out schizo who's mumbling about working for the FBI on a top secret mission. A top secret mission in the dairy department.

Most the homeless people I encountered during the years I lived in downtown Vancouver seemed pretty aware. I think you are confusing "mentally ill" with "addicted to drugs".
