"It's a giant tanker which has cuts in the side," BP spokesman Toby Odone told AFP.

"It ingests oil and oily water and then separates out the oil and expels the water."

The giant ship is some 300 yards (275 meters) long and can suck up 21 million gallons of oily water a day.
Sounds like a great tool for them to use. I just hope it works as described, too many companies like to over-promise and under-deliver.

It was going to be a super tanker and carry oil but when it was recently finished, about the time the gulf spill started, the owners converted it to collect oily water from the gulf and then remove the oil from the water and put the water back in the gulf.

The holes down the side are for letting the water & oil in.

The water floods in & drives through a seperation hold through a type of ballast separating the oil from the water.

              Great idea, hope it works

You do realize that diesel comes from refined crude?

So unless that have refinery on board then yes they will need to fill up.

Fuel that super tankers use is very close to crude. It has the viscosity of warm tar. And is very cheap compared to refined diesel or gasoline.

that's pretty awesome, they should fire up dozens of these around the spill, and just suck the oil right out, heh

On of the hold ups getting it to do a test run was they were waiting on the EPA to sign off on the water it discharged back into the Gulf. Stupid things like that annoy me. The water it puts back in the Gulf is cleaner than the water it took out. I guess govt and common sense do not coexist.

Interesting that the ships owners knew BP couldn't contain the spill from day one and had the just completed new ship altered to clean the gulf.
