Senator Robert C. Byrd, the Democratic Senator of West Virginia has

...died at the age of 92. He was the longest setting Senator in our history. He first entered the Congress in 1952 as a member of the House and became a Senator in 1959.

He was a racist bigot and a career politician. Twice as scummy as most.

In his early twenties he became a member of the KKK and once wrote the following.

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. ?
? Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944.

He dropped his membership in the KKK around 1953 and once made the following statement.

I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened.

Regardless, like he said...you can't erase what happened. The fucker was a member of the KKK.

Good Riddance. We don't need people sitting in office for 50 years. Especially if they are racist fucks like Robert Byrd was.

Just as you cannot erase the fact that you are a self admitted thief...and thieves should not be allowed on this board but you have been here for years.

After his apology he then voted against the 1964 Civil Rights act, and managed to funnel over a billion dollars to his home state to build projects that were mostly named after him, and were quite often pointless. (e.g. they had a coast guard office.... in a land locked state). This was due to the fact that he stayed chairman of the Senate Appropriations committee for decades!

Total scumbag classic career politician. He is the kind of person that we can never let stay in office again. He is a classic example of why we need term limits.

I'm sorry for his family, but I'm happy for the country.

                    He once said the following.

Byrd said that he regrets filibustering and voting against the Civil Rights Act of 1964[24] and would change it if he had the opportunity.

Yes...the man had major flaws but the people of West Virginia apparently loved him. He never lost an election.

Sure they loved him.... He paid off everyone in the state that was part of the power structure with money drained from the rest of us.

I say good riddance to bad rubbish, and I pray we change things so that we never see his ilk again.

Which is why our system needs to change.... we need to vote them ALL out.... and institute terms limits to quell this crap once and for all.

I met him once when he spoke at my alma mater... He was a graduate of the law school.

He did what a politician is suppose to do. Represent the people of his state with unwaivering vigor. He was the King of pork barrel legislation though.

Hey Einstein how passes the term limits laws? Even if Congress passes it all it takes is ONE guy to fight it in court. The only way it would get passed if it's passed as Constitutional Amendment.

Also it doesn't need change the PEOPLE vote for these guys so it's the PEOPLE that are the problem. Everyone talks about about how Congress is bad but 95% of incumbents win re-election. I see a HUGE disconnect there. Because people don't think that "Congress is bad" they think "Congress is bad EXCEPT for MY guy". At the end of the day YOU have control over YOUR representative so if you want change you need to vote YOUR guy out. If everyone did that the problem would be solved. But everyone thinks it's the OTHER guy this is the problem.

Also pork is bad as long as it goes to someone else. Show me a guy that cuts a pork project for his district and I'll show you a guy not getting re-elected. Even though most of the people in his district are supposedly anti-pork and believes the budget needs to be trim and the deficit reduced. Once again it's disconnect with the PEOPLE.

The problems in DC are not a result of a problem with politicians it's problem with VOTERS. Until the PEOPLE realize that THEY are why things in DC are fucked up and realize they are fucking ignorant dolts then things aren't going to change.

Hey Einstein! (I assume you meant this as a compliment since I said nothing that would warrant you insulting me)

I'm well aware of the fact that it would take a constitutional amendment, the same way we put term limits on the presidency in 1951, and I agree with a lot of your points, BUT...

A big problem is that once people are elected and become part of the machine they have access to MASSIVELY bigger resources than someone trying to compete with the incumbent. Those resources allow for a huge amount of branding, and name recognition is a large part of the election process, particularly in non-presidential elections.

If you read the federalist papers you will see that it was NEVER the founders intent that someone serve for 50 years, or anything close to it. You were supposed to represent your community, and then go back to your home and business. The fact that we have all of these laws and taxes that are never applied to career politicians themselves makes me ill.

It takes a 2/3rds majority to pass the amendment, and personally, I have been working towards only electing people that will vote to pass it.

It is good news day. Byrd dead and Gun Rights forced on States

I can not stand the KKK member Robert Byrd, but do hate to see a death of someone who has had a lot of infulence on the country, even if it is mostly bad. Expect a Dem appointment from the Gov in WV

                                                          The good news, http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2...or-gun-rights/
Finally, the 2nd Amendment is being recognized and forced on the states that take rights from Americans. Looks like a good start to Independence weekend!

Out with the old, in with the new. If he were a legitimate politician looking out for the good of the people, I'd be fine with him serving/living 238478374687668234 years but something tells me that's not true.

His true feelings about black people etc. since his youth may well only be known to him. Just because he says something doesn't mean he's not simply saying it to keep getting votes and be politically correct. That's not to say it's BAD to make his apologies etc. - it's a good thing, but given his past, who knows if he really legitimately lost his hatred of black people or simply quelled it when seeing the moneybags of political office.

He was a legitimate politician, regardless of what you think. I don't like Dick Cheney either and he's done a lot of harm to this country but I won't be cheering his death. That's pathetic.

Those were the true feelings for many people born around 1917. It was pretty normal in America to feel that way. It was only 50 or so years since they were all slaves. Just because he was very old, you're blaming the sins of his fathers and his country on him after they've changed.

You were supposed to represent your community, and then go back to your home and business. The fact that we have all of these laws and taxes that are never applied to career politicians themselves makes me ill.
