    The shit (oil) is about to hit the fan

    We're about to see the first tropical storm hit the Gulf. This is going to be a very active season for sure.

    THERE IS A HIGH CHANCE...80 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM
    BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS. THIS
    SYSTEM...ACCOMPANIED BY HEAVY RAINS AND GUSTY WINDS...IS FORECAST
    TO MOVE SLOWLY TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST AND REACH THE YUCATAN
    PENINSULA IN A DAY OR TWO. ALL INTERESTS IN THE NORTHWESTERN
    CARIBBEAN SEA AND YUCATAN SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS

                              They don't really need to make hurricanes to occur during hurricane season. But what you can do is cause an oil spill and do a bit of cloud seeding to make it worse.

                                  put in my phonecall this morning to try and get on a boat and take my hazmat class to get involved in helping with the spill, it is really affecting us locally - cant sit back and watch anymore.                                                   The big thing is that everytime a storm comes through, the boats capturing oil HAVE TO leave the area, leaving the uncut well to leak completely unrestricted for several days.

It could even upgrade to a hurricane and slam into Texas or LA. It could go into Mexico and never hit the Gulf. These storms have a mind of their own.

                                                          They could work with hazmat suits and oxygen masks but BP doesn't want it to seem as though the air is dangerous. Much like when cleaning up after 9-11 and they said the air was ok. (even though the buildings were condemned for asbestos) Now most of the workers are dead or dying from one related illness or another.

                                                                              I actually find the models to be highly accurate, and aren't wrong very much. I remember the models showing katrina coming to new orleans when it was still in the atlantic.

                                                                                  I wouldn't go as far as calling it bunk, but it is currently "unproven"

                                                                                  An unknown variable on the overall cycle is the introduction of BP's dispersant of choice, Corexit 9500, which may be either helping or hurting the degree of evaporation. Dispersants break up the natural surface tension in oil, sending small droplets into the water column and reducing the surface area which may evaporate, however it also changes the chemistry of the oil which remains on the surface. We have yet to find any science on the subject of the evaporation rates of these compounds or their likelihood to come back down as contaminated rain.

                                                                                          yeah, i read that article earlier this morning when i was looking into this story, as i read it, the article states that oil could possible lose volume & evaporate, that's a far cry from it raining oil inland.

                                                                                          epa also says no. at this point, let's just focus on containing the gusher and not jumping to conclusions about oil rain and devastating hurricanes, IMO.

                                                                                                      Not really driving at anything, except the possibility of oil being carried far inland. I think it is just like a huge tornado if you look at it from the side.

                                                                                                      I don't know whats gonna happen.. I probaby wont be going back to new orleans for a while. I've never seen the temps in the atlantic and gulf this high this early since I been following storms.

                                                                                                                  I understand what you're saying but that is kind of the same attitude that got us into this mess. You have to think ahead of the disaster, not sit around and wait to see what happens. Storms this season are inevitable, it makes sense to prepare NOW. Whatever that is....

                                                                                                                          i never said don't prepare, they are prepared. it takes 120 hours for them to clear out the containment vessels etc, there's nothing else they can do. are they going to aqnchor 3000 miles of boom? round up all the animals? shut off the oil? what?

                                                                                                                          to categorize my view as an attitude that got us into this mess is ridiculous and assuming.


                                                                                                                          feel free to list 1 thing, just 1, that they could do today that would contain more oil and/or prepare for a hurricane such that it would limit the damage.

                                                                                                                                      there wasn't a plan in place in case of a gusher and there certainly isn't for a gusher + hurricane. that IS the problem. can't just snap your fingers and make it so. even in light of a storm.

The thing that bothers me is we are still using the same failed tactics from 30+ years ago. I feel we are smarter than this...
