$2k for new PC - What to buy?

If you had 2k to blow on a new PC workstation, what would you buy? Should be something you can order off the 'net.

Didn't realize how much you can get these days for 2k.

Depends what you intend on doing with it. If you're into Gaming, a good chunk of that $$$ should go towards a GeForce 4 video card. If you're not and it's mainly business, then you can get more CPU power and ram, and an average video card.

If you're into video editing, then you want to make sure you have firewire (ieee 1394)

But for every day work PCs, Dell is good. I used to work in tech support in the industry, and when people called with their probs, I asked what kind of system they had. The ones that were happy with their systems and their support was Dell owners.

Other than that, there's Alienware, Falcon North West, ABS Computers and monarch which are all good, but mainly made for Gamers in mind.

No way man, either get a Radeon 9700 Pro for $320 (if you shop around) OR hold off for another month and pick up a Geforce FX 5800 Ultra when they come out.

If you only wanted to spend a couple hundred on a video card, then get a Geforce 4

Anyone know why Dell's LCD monitors are so cheap? Their 18" flat screens are less than most 15"ers I've looked at from other companies.

I'm not looking for a gaming system btw. Just day to day biz and some video editing in Premier.

Here's one I just built. It's one ugly ass machine but it kicks ass on games and just about everything else. I built it out of parts you can order on the net.

Thermaltake Xaser case and 465 watt PS
Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Radeon 9500 Pro
Intel PEBT2 motherboard
512MB DDR333 RAM
P4 2.53 Ghz
80 GB Maxtor hard drive
Yamaha CD-RW F1
18 inch NEC LCD

Still need to clean up the wires and replace the white face plate of the Soundblaster Live Drive with a black one. Unfortunately I'm stuck with the white CDRW drive. Also going to get the HDTV connector for the Radeon video card so I can play games in 720P on the big screen TV.

I'll never buy a premade one again after building my own.

The green alien fetus in the background was not included.

Definitely build it yourself, you get so much more for your money. BTW the GeForce FX is going to kick ass.

Never been happier with a brand.

The only downside (on the desktops) I've come across is the small cases with no room for front end expansion.
Problem solved by using Firewire devices.

I got a custom job from a good company in town and have never been happier. Had two problems and getting it fixed was short and sweet, with no headaches. Plus it was cheaper than any brand of compter for comparable stuff.
