              FB is quick to kill off people's accounts for the tiniest reasons, if given a reason at all. I won't be using it.

                  It will be popular, for sure and I think they will get a good number of users. That said, I don't think gmail is going to lose a ton of users. The facebook email will have to be so good that it will need to convince gmail users to go through the hassle of switching email addresses and then telling everyone they talk to on a regular basis that they are doing just that. I suppose they can always use gmail's forwarding for a while until they get the change, but will facebook mail be that much more impressive that people will be driven to use it?

                                                                                                                  All facebook needs to do is come out with an EMAIL CLIENT that is very fast, easy to use, some what customizable, and allows you to create FOLDERS and tada. You are better than GMAIL.

                                                                                                                  Make it a stand alone product so I do not have to log into my FB account, and I'm sold.

Not only that I host several .com email accounts with them. FB may get the online rookies but I don't think they have chance in reaching the truly Internet literate folks.

                                                                                                                                                                                          Installed base -- Gmail has a huge installed base that would be a bitch to migrate
                                                                                                                                                                                          Self Interest -- Adwords is getting pimped hard on GMAIL because advertisers love to target click opportunities as people are THINING of a particular topic (ie., when you're emailing about a particular topic). This gives Google a massive incentive to keep improving GMAIL
                                                                                                                                                                                          FB has to play catch up to Gmail's innovations -- Gmail has several years of innovation under its belt from the labs feature to active mail to conversation style mail
