This idiot lost $112 million gambling at Harrah's Casinos in Vegas in 2007!

Incredible...

Quote:
High-roller?s lawyers try to dismiss casino debt case

Lawyers for a high-rolling Nebraska gambler are seeking to dismiss criminal charges in Las Vegas stemming from nearly $15 million in gambling debts, saying the district attorney has a conflict of interest and has acknowledged the gambler didn't intend to defraud the casinos.

Lawyers for 53-year-old Terrance "Terry" Watanabe filed two motions late Friday in Clark County District Court.

One says Watanabe didn't intend to defraud Harrah's Entertainment Inc. because he had sufficient funds to cover the 38 casino markers he took out. Another says the district attorney's office has a conflict of interest in the case because it stands to make a fee for recovering the money.

Watanabe has pleaded not guilty to theft and bad check charges.

Yeah, I see it's an update on an ongoing case. Here it says he lost over $200 million.

Quote:
Vegas' Biggest Loser's Losses Now Over $200 Million

In a lawsuit filed last year against Harrah's Entertainment, Watanabe's lawyers acknowledged that the Omaha, Neb., philanthropist had lost the astounding sum of $127 million. But now that his attorneys have examined casino records handed over in discovery, they say he lost far more: a staggering $204 million in a single year at two Harrah's casinos, the Rio and Caesars Palace.

...

He faces as much as 28 years in prison under a unique Nevada law that allows the Clark County district attorney's office to recover a casino's bad debts. The district attorney's office receives a 10 percent cut of any money it recovers.

...

O'Donnell contends the casino violated Nevada law by allowing Watanabe to gamble while he was intoxicated and plying him with prescription painkillers without a doctor's order.

...

"It boggles my mind that they would want to make this a criminal charge when the guy has given them that much already," Thompson said. "It just shows our industry is in a greedy position when we are trying to soak a guy for that much."

I was working a Caesars Palace when all this went down.. I had many interactions with him, and have been to his room on the 46th floor many times. He always treated me good but the casino ALWAYS kept him high and drunk.. It was put out by Harrahs corp that "You never say no to Mr Watanabe, If you do then you will be fired"

After $100M one would think he would start entertaining the possibility that he may have a mild gambling problem.

Still, it was very nice of him to donate his millions to the wealthy casino owners.

In 2000, Watanabe sold his entire stake in the company to Los Angeles-based private equity firm Brentwood Associates, and resigned as CEO and President. [1] Watanabe is alleged to have had alcohol and gambling problems resulting in losing US$204 million to the Rio and Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in 2007. [3] Harrah's, which owns the two casinos, derived 5.6% of its revenues that year from Watanabe. He has paid $112 million but refused to pay the rest prompting Harrah's to file criminal charges against Watanabe. [4]

That's pretty fucking gangster. If you have that much money that after 112 million you're basically like "fuck you come get the rest" ... although I don't agree with it - that's pretty ballsy.

Yeah, I know of some guys who got lucky with whales in gaming and webcams, but do you think a casino would keep on paying commission once it reaches such ridiculous amount like $100+ millions ?

If you have a blog you should write up a whole blog post about all the shit you saw with this guy. I bet it would go viral and could get picked up the local Vegas media.

He does play online, but not nearly as much as in a casino. He was up around the $5 million in purchases mark for the online gaming company I worked for.

i don't understand why he would need all those markers if he is so loaded. i don't gamble though so i don't know how that all works. but 38 markers at one casino, certainly someone should get fired for extending that kind of credit eh.

I agree.. In his room there is a safe that looks just like a walk in bank vault.. The amount of cash I saw in there was un-fucking real..! All CASH... He would walk around with a backpack with around 8-10 million in it for a nights worth of gambling... I used to say to him "Your crazy to carry around that kind of money" He would just laugh and say " It's only money, I have a lot more where that came from" I must admit he was a very nice guy and always treated me good...

It's not gambling in the normal sense of starting small and trying to win big it's just spending time doing something you enjoy doing - expensively.
