.wmv file question
ok, stupid question time...
I am editing some clips for the site, and the prog i am using only spits out .wmv files. Is this the same thing as mpeg's? And can people using Mac's view the .wmv files? And is there any *free* progs out there that spit out mpegs instead of wmv's?

mpeg is a compression format with several variants. i believe the 'mpeg' you are referring to is mpeg-1. wmv (if i am not mistaken) is mpeg-4. (dvd is mpeg-2, im sure you know what mpeg3 is)
you can find a lot of info and software here: www.vcdhelp.com ![]() |

Hmmmm - I'm not sure that .wmv is mpeg anything. I'm fairly sure that they are two separate and distinct formats.
We use .wmv for all the clips on our site and we have had one Mac user who could never see anything in .wmv even though he downloaded the Mac version of the Windows Media Player.

Kind of depends on what you're putting into the program.
What kind of files are you inputting? What kind of editing do you want to do? How are you going to present the videos to your customers/surfers? We have had some mac users who complain. The main thing we had to do was stop embedding video into the site for Mac users. It needs to open in it's own player. If it's something small you might want to look into putting the videos in swf format. Good luck to you, James |

You take a WAV file and turn it into a MP3
Nice and compressed take a MPEG and compress it to a WMV file Thats basically how I understand it. so WMV file is a great way to go, smaller file size, decent quality and plays with windows media. |

To answer questions so far... I am just going to have the link up so the members can either play them there or download them. It is going to be video - no sound (at least now). I was curious as to ho many people could view it. I had a few friends DL it and almost all had to download codecs and then it only worked for about 75% of them. And none of my friends use MACs. The program I am using is the one that you get free with XP - windows movie maker version 2.0 or something like that. I am not really at the point where I want to pay to download a pro editing thing - and even if I was i have not seen any good ones out there. What do yall use for editing movies and getting the end result to be mpg format?

.wmv is not as universally playable as mpeg, but is is pretty good.
We put a link near ours: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ad/default.asp In case the surfer needs an upgrade. Microsoft has players for mac, linux, windows, etc. But some surfers will of course not bother if they need an update and move on. If you want near 100% compatability, use mpeg. |

as far as the bandwidth to compatability debate goes, .wmv is worth it over .mpeg in my opinion.
I guess if you arent paying for your bandwidth, or have unlimited or something, then mpeg is better. |

![]() and foolio, i made a mistake b4 .... mpeg 3 is not mp3, thats mpeg1 layer 3 ... hi tech shit. i believe, however, that there is an mpeg4 format now that is a stream that works in quicktime (hence i would guess it should work on a mac) ... and unless im just ign'ant, wmv is mpeg4 ... someone smarter could clarify or help you more maybe, id certainly love to learn more about it ![]() anyhow there is the free windows media encoder, i dont know if thats what you are using in wmm. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ad/default.asp Virtualdub or Nandub might also be useful, depending on your source file... |

WMV is Windows Media Video and was created by Microsoft. WMV is a somewhat generic term. It depends when/how the file was encoded. Since version 7 of Windows Media, Microsoft uses its own version of MPEG-4. The original version of DivX (the one with the smiley face) was based on a hacked WMV codec.
If your confused with the term "codec", it simply refers to a coder/decoder or compression/decompression. |
