i think there are 2-3 gunships in the air..

See all the rag heads running away, getting nailed by bomb after bomb till they drop.

I wonder how high up they are? 25 - 30,000 +?

Profile: AC-130 gunship

The AC-130 Spectre gunship which the Americans are using for special operations in southern Afghanistan was designed for close support of ground forces.
It is a development of the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft and as such is slow, flying at less than 300mph, but has a range of at least 1,500 miles without needing to refuel and can loiter over a combat area for some time.

The AC-130s are operated by the US Air Force's special operations group, based at Hurlburt Field, Florida.

They have several big guns projecting from the left side of the fuselage: either two 40mm cannons or a 25mm Gatling gun that can fire up to 1,800 rounds per minute, depending on the version, and 40mm and 105mm cannons.

Computerised

Although based on an old Hercules transport plane, the AC-130 has one of the most complex aircraft weapon systems.

It uses television, infra-red and radar sensors to locate ground targets, even at night. Uniquely, in the latest type, the targeting computers can follow two separate targets with two different sensors and fire two different guns.

Former crew members say that, in practice, the guns were never fired simultaneously - and the ammunition load was an issue, so it was used sparingly.

The newest AC-130U version - known as Spooky II - has twice the ammunition capacity.

Large crew

The aircraft has more than a dozen crew: Pilot, co-pilot, navigator, fire control officer, electronic warfare officer, flight engineer, operators for its TV camera and infra-red detection set, a loadmaster, and four or five "gunners" - who reload the weapons which are normally controlled from the flight deck.

Although regarded as a highly successful machine - used most recently in support of operations in Panama, Grenada, the Gulf War and Bosnia - its slowness and typical low operating altitude make it vulnerable to ground fire.

It does have a system that drops chaff and flares to counter radar and infra-red guided missiles. There are also heat shields under the engines to try to mask them from heat-seeking missiles.

Even so, one AC-130 was shot down in Iraq by a surface-to-air missile. The other recent loss was in Somalia when, it is thought, a round exploded in one of the plane's cannons.

There are 21 of the two types of AC-130 on "active duty", according to the US Air Force

It is probably under 5,000 feet. It is probably a single gunship. A single gunship can devastate a community size town of 20,000 people or so. They are accurate enough to target a single individual that say is standing 5 yards from you. The fire power you see is slow an selective. If they really released their fire power in a sustained manner it is very impressive to see.

exactly, the firepower doesnt really impress me that much in the vid: i've seen worse on footage made over 50 years ago.

But since your father was a military man: how is it possible
the airplane 'hangs' in the air? No matter how high they are;;
there should be some consistent movement or turning?

it doesn't hang in air, it circles on it's left

the reason why it seems like that in the video is because the guns stays on the target while it's moving

them guys running like roaches they should of ran along time ago i guess they didn't think a slow cargo plane had so much fire power

I too was in the military for 12 years and have witnessed the fire power of the AC-130 as well as various types of helicopter gunships. The aircraft is not hanging in the air. There are at least two possibilities as to why it appears that it is. One the video has a problem, two the sights give the appearance of being stationary, which I suspect may be the case. It is a fixed wing aircraft and does not have any type of hover capability.

That is badass, I didn't know 1 or maybe even 3 gunships could just simply circle above and drop down load after load of super accurate bombs.

Send this to all towel heads wanting to join the next Jihad

though i never have seen a live fire from a gunship
but i have seen where once a gun gets on target it moves
on point while the plane is flying

similar to the Abrahms tank, only tank in the world that can shoot accurate on target while still moving

We used to get transported in the cargo version of that plane when I was in the army. You sit on benches by the walls of the plane, and it shakes and rattles during the entire flight.
First time I was on one, I drank like 3 bottles of coke before getting on it, for a 3 hour flight, shaking and rattling.
When I got into it, I realized there was no toilet on the thing.
Man that flight was a bitch...

From what I've seen in TV footage on the AC130, it circles, like in the picture that was posted above. And it's basically a huge gattling gun on the side of the place that hits with deadly accuracy with explosive shells. That was seriously impressive for accuracy standpoint cause they stay very high up so that they go relatively undetected by sound. Also you can tell by the delay it takes for the impact.

It's got a Toilet (crude one) I made a shit pot of jump's from the C130... Jumps from them was called a Blast.. 60+ men would jump from'm usually in around 30 seconds or so... you would be pushing the guy in front of you and going out right on his ass. Jumping from a C130 could be very conducive of getting fucked up if you didn't exit the door right. Only people I saw quit Airborne after I got 2 my regular unit was because of the C130..

my dad flies the normal c-130s, and according to him, they'll rip the shit out of infantry like no other. if youve seen the movie black hawk down, he gets all riled up because they didnt allow the gunships in the area...he said they would of solved the problem in a few minutes. but, instead they were dropping off grain which was taken by the warlords. we didnt even have the gunships in the area...anyways...c-130 gunships are hellah cool although 40+ years old

That is a killer clip. One thing that I don't exactly understand though is that they use one bomb that costs them THOUSANDS of dollars just to kill one guy at a time. I agree with the comments that the person posted underneath the clip 100%.

Yeah, it had something we called a "shit-n-carry", a disposable cardboard toilet. I'd rather wet myself though, haha. There were no walls in front of it, so you'd have to do your thing in front of everyone.
We had those out in the field as well, they'd get soggy and crumble after a day or two, those things were nasty.

equipped with the Vulcan Gatlin Gun
that gun can shoot like 100 rounds a second

that gun shoots so fast that first you see smoke then a second later you hear like a loud fart,

Better to spend a few hundred thousand to wipe out a bunch of Taliban soldiers than to endanger 100's of US Soldiers lives on the ground trying to flush them out. They have the technology they might as well use it.

The US never cares how much it spends during a war its all relitive. There is endless funding and this was always going to be a small cheap war for them.

I can only imagine those poor towel heads running through that shit, my god was a nightmare coming down from the sky. It would be like a James Bond movie but 100 times worse. And to think that hiding in the bushes is no use because they can see your heat sig and if you stop they just drop one 10 feet from you. OUCH!

only $30 per round...

From the main page:

Site traffic went way up after I posted the long video clip of an AC-130 in action in Afghanistan. What was cool was that a former gunship crew member sent me a message and answered some questions I had about the plane and the weapons. Good news to the taxpayers, by the way: turns out it's relatively cheap to send one of those monsters into battle.

"I flew AC-130s (both H and U models) for 9 years, but have been 'flying the desk' for the last two.... The guy who said that we are dropping '$10,000 bombs' couldn't be farther off [NOTE: He's referring to the smartass comment my buddy Ollie made]. The 105mm is actually an exploding shell, or, in essence, a big bullet. Gunship 105mm has been stockpiled from old Army stores for decades (as the Army uses very few 105s these days). When I last checked, a 105 round cost the Air Force about $30 each. Once those stockpiles are exhausted and they have to contract out for new rounds, they will probably triple or quadruple in cost. Though that is still years away, it is still only about $100 per round. Had they used a single 'smart bomb' on that target, it would have cost about a quarter million dollars! Gunships are very economical and extremely accurate.

one other version of hell besides the AC 130 that they have in their arsenal for many years is the "daisy-cutter" (sp?) bomb. I wonder if its dropped from the AC-130 as well?

If I'm not mistaken the Daisy Cutter can only be dropped from a b-29 as the bomb is the size of an suv and weights 5000lbs.

My favorite plane is the B-2.

The B-29 is a Second World War vintage bomber. The "Daisy Cutter" actually weighs 15,000 pounds and is usually, if not always, dropped from a C-130 (not to be confused with the AC-130).

Beneath any comment - I was not discussing "terrorist camps" either nor BBC TV.

Suppose the point must be lost or ya just could not get it anyway...

that gun shoots so fast that first you see smoke then a second later you hear like a loud fart,

They have these mounted in special SUV's (Suburban size) with steel grating floors (so the hot shells fall out on the ground and don't burn the personel). The slide up and out of the roof and can clear up trouble in a hurry for diplomats and VIPs. Cool article in an old Road & Track or Car & Driver.

do you really think that everyone that is not some 15 yr old, female Euro Hippie like you... "just doesn't get it"?

there is a reason that the world is not full of 20 year old, liberal, female politicians. in spite of what you think, it is not because the world just "doesn't get" the fact that your short and limited life experience and both narrow and biased perspective has given you some sort of enlightened and perfect view of how things ought to be.

What are they yelling when something blows up?

It sounds like they're saying "BANG BANG"
