Question for LED 120Hz HDTV owners: "Soap Opera Effect" on the movie AVATAR - GoFuckYourself.com

Hi,

This question is sure to sound very strange to some people, but here it goes:

Have you watched the Blu Ray version of Avatar on your 120hz+ LED Television, and noticed the "Soap Opera Effect"?

I was in a home theatre store the other day and checked out the new HDTV from Samsung. I forget the modem number, but it was a a super-thin TV with a 120hz LED Display.

I couldn't stop looking that this baby. It was showing Avatar, and it was the sharpest most amazing pictures I had ever seen. WOW! I said....

But there was more going on. The picture was beyond sharp. It was... weird...! I couldn't remember seeing so much detail in the original movie when I saw it in Imax 6 months ago. I could see every color of ever spec of dirt in ever pore of every actor's face. It was strange...

The "Soap opera effect" I'm referring to is something I can't really explain, but is described by others in the same way. The image somehow looked like I was watching a TV soap opera, shot on video, instead of a movie shot on film. There was a certain something to the image that I can't really put into words.

Anyway I did some digging and found that 120hz and higher TV's have an option known as Motion Interpolation Technology" to alleviate the video artifacts caused by content shot at frame rates that differ from the TV. (Movies are 24 frames per second, while TV is 30 and 60 frames per second), but I don't think this is what I am seeing.

Anyway, does anyone here have one of these TV's? Do you find that this issue distracts you from the movie? Or does it make it even better? While watching a few minutes of Avatar yesterday, I couldn't decide.

You're probably referring to the Samsung 9000. You get used to it after a while and, yes, you can turn off the "soap opera" effect.

Try turning off the 60hz if you can?
I find lots of things look unatural running at 120hz. Movements look funky.

i have a samsung 46 inch 6500 LED and it's amazing

at first you're watching shows and they look a little fake - almost amateurish, but you get used to it quick and the picture is unbeatable

Avatar was shot digitally and not on film.

Yeah my buddy has a samsung that is truly mind blowing! First time I saw it, I asked him what was wrong with the TV? LOL! It was completely unlike anything i had seen before!

I totally want to get one, but i just bought a new plasma last year so I won't be upgrading for a while

I know it was shot all digital - most movies since Superman Returns in 2004 have been digital, but thats not the point I was trying to make. Movies shot with digital cameras such as the Panavision Genis HD and digital intermediate cinematograph process still look like film, on the big screen or on TV. The LED TV that I saw though seemed to... I don't know.. make it all look like "video".

Cool thanks for the info. So when you watch movies then, you like this effect? And do you find it distracting? Or do you prefer this type of image? Does it enhance the film at all?

Or, do you now hate watching 60hz tv's ?

I bought my 52" plasma about 5 years ago and still love it, and a 48" LCD tv which I rarely use except as a computer monitor sometimes. I still love my plasma but after seeing the Samsung yesterday, I now really really want one of these too..

I think you can enable a 24p mode on those TV aswell (got a 40" samsung lcd), so the hollywood movies wont look like that..

i dont' have one, but a few buddies have quite a few samsung leds. and yeah i know exactly what you're talking about. we all saw it too when they first came out. but yeah you get used to it, and its not just something like avatar(funny i was waching it today on the LED) but all movies appear like that

120hz TVs add tweener frames. So it will look a little strange until you get use to it. Different tvs use different techniques so they will all look a bit different

Also, 120 hz movement takes a while to get use to. If you have ever been a PC gamer, moving from 60 hz to 100 or 120 hz looks very strange at first. But once you go back, 60 hz looks like a flip book animation..lol.
