its been BP since they aquired Amoco in 98, before the it was British Petroleum and before that it was Anglo-Persian Oil Company...
just as I am sure after this it will be called something else...
just like Transocean was called Sonat until the early 80's when it needed a new name to get people to forget they were responsible for a huge oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico...Comment

If I understand this correctly Coup, you're attempting to blame the average consumer for BP's gross negligence? I'm not getting how you arrived at that. Consumers buy what they are told to buy. GM wants more profit, so they build the Hummer and blast the public with ads to buy it. Public does as they are instructed to do in order to keep with current standards (in the case of Hummer, that standard was set by GM and the creation of the Hummer).
Maybe I'm wrong and this isn't your intention, but I'm going to have to guess that it is because of the pics of suburbs and parking lots and references to shopping. By this reasoning, do we also blame the public for slave labor in China? Suicides at the iPhone factories? Toyota's negligence? etc?
As a consuming member of the public, I take offense to being blamed for BP's leak because I bought what was being pushed on me 24/7. (which is not just cars, but everything. Including the food YOU eat.)

The biggest lie kids are taught to believe when they are young is that they are "consumers."
In the mindset of consuming and being labeled as consumers, their subconscious reaction to the outside world is "i need to consume this. i may not need this, but i need to consume it."
They are born into debt thru no fault of their own, but they are instant indentured servants.
In the U.S. you can practically walk down any street and see piles of plastic refuse.
Massive amounts of plastic toys, computer peripherals...things acquired because they needed to be consumed, but which are now junk to be tossed in the trash, having become obsolete because of the next widget presented on the market.
GDP = growth = consumption
This is a no win standard which brings us to the tragedy unfolding today.
If the U.S. didnt WASTE so many resources there would be no need to drill in the ocean for more oil.

I blame the corporations, not the public. Like you said, we are born into this system and born into debt. We are born 'consumers' and bombarded with advertising our entire lives. The corps could have come up with better alternatives for nearly everything along the way. Instead, everything is based on oil. And most certainly, the negligence of a massive oil company resulting in a disaster like this falls on the greed of the corp.
If, as a parent, I feed my kid nothing but sugar filled candy his entire life and his teeth rot out of his head by age 5, who is responsible? The kid for wanting the candy pushed on him? For being told "this is what you need!" Or the parent doing the pushing.SIG TOO BIGComment

even crazier considering i am a capitalist, but my idea of capitalism and the shit happening today is far different.
amazing people today still have this stigma against socialism somehow relating to communism, but the truth is a captitalistic socialistic system with checks and balances would work.
problem is any power structure or paradigm shift is subject to corruption and usually ends up corrupted.
so where does that leave humanity? fuck if i know.

I blame all of the greedy politicians who have taken money from Big Oil. They have directly and indirectly allowed alternate forms of energy to be squashed and silenced.
The people are to blame to some extent too, but it is the politicians - on BOTH sides of the isle - who have allowed this nonsense to continue for decades.Comment
