I never use BP anyway. Why am I going to pay another 10 cents a gallon for their shit when I can go to Exxon or another gas station directly across the street?

You can't always be certain which company is wholesaling to which outlets, so even if you boycott BP retail stations (which is probably more likely to hurt the franchise owner rather than BP), by buying elsewhere you may still be buying from BP wholesale...

And who said the other oil companies farts smell like roses?...

Does boycotting BP stations help? My son delivers gas to gas stations in the area. The oil from most all the wells comes to U.S. refineries. There is a main pipeline from Oklahoma to Michigan that brings most all the gas here. My son loads up his truck at the local terminal. The exact same gas goes to Shell, Admiral, Kroger, Texaco, Speedway ... and BP gas stations. The BP stations are owned by independent LOCAL people trying to make a living for their families.

Do you think boycotting BP stations has 1 scintilla effect of hurting BP. If you don't buy the gas from a BP station and go to Shell you are still buying products derived from a combination of wells ... including BP's. You are simply hurting your local businessman that happens to own a BP logo'd station. Think about it. Only a miniscule amount of profit goes to BP for the logo on the station. You are hurting many independent men/women trying to support their families.

Yes, BP did a bad thing by not putting safety features on their wells. I'd say get them in the courts and make BP pay the price. Not the independents.

JMHO

There's one station in my area, but I don't go there anyway because it's a bitch to pull out of the place once you get your gas(traffic situation).

You do know that they are all independently owned and operated right?

So if you boycott BP, you are hurting the little man and your local economy. If BP goes bankrupt, who is going to pay for the clean up? Tax Dollars?

Exactly ... That's what people fail to realize... Your few tanks of gas aren't going to mean shit to BP... they just provide the gasoline at the pumps. The store is individually owned so really you're fucking over your local business owner...

Way to be a douche!

A very small % of money goes to the gas station owner for gas, often the gas doesn't make a profit - which is why they have a store, gas stations with stores normally have cheaper gas.

Refineries, it makes no difference what gas station you use.

Crude oil producers, it does impact them. They get the largest cut of money, without question. They're the only ones posting billions in profits that keep growing. They take as much as 2/3 of the money - at the pump. The rest is taxes, refinery costs and the gas station owner.

So you CAN boycott BP simply by not buying gas and oil from Companies they own or parter with. If you don't want to hurt the local business owner, stop in a buy a 12 pack of beer or whatever every now and then, like you normally would. Just keep getting your gas from a non-BP station.

Except this part has a flaw. I mentioned it above. It's a fungible commodity.

You might as well piss up a rope.

Crude oil can be traded, that doesn't change anything. If BP trades with a another Company - BP is still the one that makes the profit on the traded oil - it's a 1 for 1 trade - equal. It makes no difference who pulled it out of the ground, it only matters when the profits are made.

Maybe you don't understand what it means.

It is true that you (we) can use less oil (by reducing consumption of petroleum based products), and the lack of demand usually means less revenue to the companies that sell this commodity.

What you cannot do is isolate that effect to BP because oil is a fungible commodity.
