Star Wars. Would rather watch paint dry.

Paul Markham 06-01-2010 10:44 AM

A lot of the movies here I never saw, after watching the preview I knew it was not for me.

Moulin Rouge was one Eva and I both walked out of after a 20 minutes. Just never got it.

Harry Potter my daughter loves so have to watch it. Just the same story over and over again.

In general anything with too much work done on a computer.

Agree on the Matrix - thought it was gonna be kickass, it was too obvious and really boring in places (how many Mr. Smiths can one viewer take?).
Totally disagree on Princess Bride (and I was in my 30s when it came out lol).

And Pulp Fiction is in my all-time top three.

No accounting for taste :upsidedow

I get it, and that's the problem. It's such an obvious fucking movie and overrated.

If you look at 2001 in the time it came out, you could say it was ahead of its time. Same with Citizen Kane. Are they earth-shattering now? Probably not.

American Beauty is one of the best movies I have seen in my life. Kevin Spacey is great :2 cents:

CarlosTheGaucho 06-01-2010 12:15 PM

Btw. there's no actual value in being "new"

New has never meant anything at all

Only thing new movies ever brought was more retardation and more animation

Movies like "Citizen Kane" or "It's a wonderful life" are as timeless as human character - their subject

kane 06-01-2010 12:15 PM

I have to agree with everyone mentioning The Matrix. I know so many people that love the first movie (and even like the sequels) and I hate the first one. It bores me, I could give a shit about Neo and the the sequels are so bad they are unwatchable.

Yeah, thats typical lately.. they are not able to bring an interesting scenario so they want to shock people with computer effects

Dogville (Nicole Kidman) - I need to add this one, the film got such a high rating on a local discussion forum that I could not wait to watch it only to find out that its basically a stage play, well a boring stage play! No one mentioned it , at least I didnt buy a DVD.

I tend to agree with this but I also think a hand full of peoples opinions should be rejected... here's my list of reasons:

1. A person who only likes about 4 or 5 movies in total (or less) and the rest is crap to them. This person is not a movie fan at all so why the hell would their opinion matter?

2. People who only like a certain type of movie ie. some people only like the trippy psychadelic movies that they can get high and watch. again, not really a movie fan if what you are watching can be easily substituted by the cartoon network. I know a handful of people who only watch and enjoy comedies, which is fine, but opinions? moot ;)

3. Artsy fartsies, or critic types, I get mistaken as one of these from time to time because I value my movie opinions and have seen more movies than most, but I also stay open minded and view each in their own class of movies, so if it is just a goofy comedy and does what it should? I will still like it and say so! The ones I mean are the types who only like 'critically acclaimed' movies and feel that all other movies are beneath them. Who wants to listen to that opinion??

4. Matrix fans, repeating statements like 'you just didn't get it man...' doesn't cut it.. the truth is THEY just don't get it--it sucks. Think a lot of those fans moved on to warship Avatar now, but I will say that movie did not suck, just didn't think it was genius.

ps. has been a dry spring/summer for movies worth watching... ironman 2 and then what?? grrrr

I also couldn't stand Moulin Rouge and I also had a female company watching that with me - 15 minutes till it was turned off

It was like if the whole movie crew was on speed, although the story at the beginning actually looked promising, I also saw "Romeo and Juliet" as a highschool screening years ago and it had the same crazy over hyped video clip style, not my cup of tea.

And yes, I totally agree that all the "after Matrix" movies using all that CGI bullshit are a big no no, instead of a good old school Steven Seagal bitchslap you gotta watch 150 replays in slow motion of an actor with his ass pinned on the wall

Another reason why most of the movies I watch are overlooked classics from 30's till 90's that I put into my IMDB "my movies list" to get them later for my late night screenings

:2 cents:: well said sir

Steven Seagal used to have great movies: Nico, Hard To kill, Marked for Death ..but then he got old and all the modern technologies turned his movies to shit with fucking shaking camera during the boring overseen fighting scenes.

SpicyM 06-01-2010 01:09 PM

But still I consider the latest American crime serials as the stupidiest things on TV..

CSI, NCIS and similiar.. LoL.. I cant really stand it.

I actually own quite a gross collection of old school action movies with all my childhood heroes like Sly, Arnold, Steven and even Chuck Norris :))

Two years ago I was shopping in Atlanta - put together a major pile of DVD's that included movies the owner probably never believed to ever be sold, like "Cobra" with Sly or "Forced Vengeance" with Chuck Norris :)

Filled two bags with DVD's and he gave me a HUGE discount:)

I am with you on Moulin Rouge. I get that it was a western take on a Bollywood style film but I just couldn't hack the out of place songs.

Every Bollywood film i've seen seemed to be more or less the same story.

2001 is the first movie I thought of too...and I'm a huge Kubrick fan...
I know this will likely lead to me getting my horror geek card pulled, but not a big fan of the original Psycho. While I understand it's place in movie and horror movie history, I just didn't care for it...very overrated

TondaB 06-01-2010 02:52 PM

Tropic Thunder

He's Not That Into You

I like psycho but know how you feel. Those are my thoughts about the original Last House on the Left. I like revenge horror, I love the concept, but find the execution poor and the movie itself difficult to watch. I'd rather watch Equinox.

What films do you not 'get' that most other people appear to love?

I saw that at a convention years ago, after hearing tons of hype, and, although I didn't find it bad, it surely did not live up to the hype.

I would add Napoleon Dynamite and Dumb & Dumber to that list for me.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Fight Club

Shut them both off after 20 mins.

There are some really interesting Asian martial arts movies with long storylines and beautiful martial arts moves. I don't completely understand how they can fight so fast like this.

Eyes Wide Shut does have some comedic value, I get a kick out of how he tells everyone he's a doctor and they just open up and tell him or give him whatever he wants.

Its not like he's a cop, he's a fucking doctor.

"Sir, you can't go in there!" "Its okay, I'm a doctor"

"Sir, I can't tell you that, that's confidential information." "Its ok, I'm a doctor."

I thought the first one was pretty cool - but that was because I was a 17 year old virgin when I saw that and of course I got a major hard on for Carrie Ann Moss (yes in fact the idea and plot was pretty interesting, i don't think 95 pct. of viewers even thought about it though..)

I admit I never felt any urge to re-watch it, the worst part is actually that there's not even a gardening instruction tape made after 1997 that would not feature CGI effects

Me too, but I love every Kubrick film ever made, my favorite of all being Paths of Glory.

Sarah_Jayne 06-03-2010 03:02 AM

I live on the housing estate where Clockwork Orange was filmed so I can't escape Kubrick and I enjoy most of his other films. It is 2001 didn't feel that great to me.

The Royal Tenenbaums for me was like torture. At the time it came out, I strongly disliked Moulin Rouge, but my wife absolutely loves it, and she plays it over and over. It gives me excuses to go on errands.

Slasher movies like SAW and Hostel.

2001 - I fell asleep 1st 2 times I saw that. Then read the book and now it's one of my favourite movies.

Mullholland Drive. Seen that 3 times, still don't know what it's about.

I like the Arthur C. Clarke part, just the movie doesn't quite communicate it somehow. Maybe the pacing is part of it.

I didn't really like The Royal Tenenbaums either despite feeling like I really was the target audience for it.

geedub 06-03-2010 07:30 AM

Avatar - was ok but some of my friends have seen this movie 4+ times already
The Hangover - same shit was ok, but I know some tards who've watched it more times than anyone ever should.. To me both of these movies are ones to only watch once..

Mullholland Drive. did not get it initially either, took several viewings but now one of my top ten all time favorites. Its a visual masterpiece and with Lynch I am always trying to read way more into it and thats what fucked me up on this film.

Heres the clue...watch very very carefully every shot in the first minute or so after the titles.....
