BP's 'Top Kill' Effort to Halt Oil Spill in Gulf Reportedly Working
BP's 'Top Kill' Effort to Halt Oil Spill in Gulf Reportedly Working . Lets hope this is going to work. Currently there is still a mixture of mud being pumped in and the next step is to add concrete
looks same as yesterday to me. The only thing is ROV is further away.

"The 'top kill' procedure is going as planned, and it is moving along as everyone had hoped," said Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, who has been leading the government's effort to end the leak.
These people are idiots for drilling so deep in the ocean, and without
a real plan for if/when something goes wrong. BP needs to be sued right
out of existence.
uh, yes, couldn't they have done this a month ago?? YES they could have, but the mother fuckers were trying to figure out a way to get the oil OUT. They took all this fucking time to do something so damn simple - "a mixture of mud being pumped in and the next step is to add concrete"
if these fuckers aren't locked up for eco terrorism...i mean WTF!!

At the very least, all of their assets should be sold off(with the money going to Louisiana fishermen) and restricted from practice in the future. Just totally nuked out of existence.

I have always been amazed by the stories that are investigated and presented on the Rachel Maddow Show.
Perplexing how often her small cable show manages to trump the bigger players when it comes to poignant matters.
Makes you wonder: Is her investigative team that great, or are most news outlets controlled by so many corporate interests that they can not report on controversial topics with the same level of impunity?
They stopped that spill exactly the same way I said a half dozen times on this forum. Relief Wells. What she fails to mention is that it takes months to drill relief wells though she does mention they have started to do so. Interesting piece.

greedy motherfuckers, can't wait to see how far above and beyond the 75 million dollar liability cap on insurance/responsibility they are willing to cover. to lazy to look up the facts right now but as i understand it, the goverment takes over with our tax dollars after the 75 million in liability is met. i've been hearing that on the news a lot lately, government wanting to raise that for future spills to 20 billion. there should be another set of rules here since the spill was due to negligence, not keeping up the proper maintenence.

I"'m not sure what the revelation here is, exactly. It's happened before.... yes, no news. They have used the same kinds of things to try to plug it and sometimes they have worked, and sometimes they haven't (look at other oil rig disasters in history)... yes, no news. The oil companies are greedy pigs and we all hate them for making too much money.... yes, that's everywhere on TV these days.
The only thing that WASN'T touched on, which would have been an interesting and unique slant on this story, was that with a similar spill in 1979 that lasted for 10 months.... the world did not actually end, and everything in the US eastern seaboard did not die forever... as the poli/enviromental groups would have you believe. I wonder why this wasn't commented upon in that piece?

I guess the revelation is, over 30 years later, a complete lack of safety and accountability still exists.
The other revelation is that this is not news that anyone else decided to report on, unlike whatever the fuck is going on with Lindsey, or Brittany, or whatever.
Just wait for the underwater plumes to start hitting land and loop currents. They just found a new underwater plume over 22 miles long and 6 miles wide and up to 3,300 ft deep. Plus it's full of toxic dispersants.
I thought there were several holes in that pipeline. And I've seen at least two different locations on the live feed. They should set up a couple of streams instead of only one.
Also, the stuff is still coming out badly.

Or conversely it could be argued that this is only the second such spill like this in over 3 decades so they must be doing something right. And if they get this hole plugged in less than 2 months when last time it took ~9 months and that previous spill was in 200 foot deep water not 5,000+ feet deep water... Well, that would mean an improvement, no?
//Not defending BP. Rather trying to use logic and not emotion when thinking about all this.

Isn't technology better now though? Just sayin'. BP could have handled this better I think, even if this effort now does in fact work.

We really can only judge how BP handled things after it's all over I think. The biggest difference is the spill 31 years ago was 200 feet down and this one is 5,000 feet down. Doing anything at that depth is extremely difficult.

Yes, I read in the news articles that they are using mass about of mud to block to hole of the spill. They also threw things like golf balls and tires into the hole in an effort to block the leaking hole. The leaking hole is 1500 meters underground - how difficult!
