I lived in South Africa for 10 years, so I would say it is much more similar to the US in many ways. Vast spaces, large suburbs with houses, you drive a lot as well as the public transport is something you don't want to rely on - the busses come like once per hour and there are no busses after 6pm (I think)...

Of course, the differences are enormous as well, but for a guy with an OK income, the life style is closer to the one you would have in the Sates IMO.
