There is some technology that could help it. There are safety valves they can put in line that are designed to stop things exactly like this. But the the Bush administration made it so that those valves were no mandatory because they cost about 500K each and BP chose not to use them on a volunteer basis.

So they could have contained it as it happened or very shorty after. They also have a few other measures that they assumed would work, but didn't so, as you say, if they don't use the valves their ability to fix a problem has not kept up with their drilling technology.

Unless we want all of the oil in that deposit laying on our beaches we need to drill in other locations of the deposit to pull the oil out properly.

I actually shed a few tears over this... Started looking through my last year beach photos when I used to live right outside of Tampa. The bay is beautiful. I'm from NYC, so I was in awe every time I went out to those beaches and seen sting rays, dolphins, and all kinds of crazy other shit in that crystal clear water. This sucks.

Actually what I want to know is why at this point are we letting BP still try to handle this. The Army Core Engineers should be on this by now as it's major disaster for the entire gulf coastal area and likely many more places with-in another month.
