What an incredible voice he had. One of the best ever.

The FIRST in Line

R.I.P. Ronnie! I was in middle school back when Dio joined Black Sabbath and they released the Heaven & Hell & Mob Rules albums. What a voice, what a singer! One of the very best hard rock & metal singers ever. Then I discovered his older material with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow of the 70's. I was a huge fan for many years. Saw him play with his Dio band in Old Bridge, NJ back in 1997. I wish he would have written a book about his life & music before he passed. Ronnie's recording history goes back to the 1950s! He is truly a pioneer that witnessed and participated in every era of music from when rock & roll was invented. Here's an old clip from one of his very first releases as a teenager in 1958 with Ronnie & the Redcaps.

So, born in 1942, he was 41 at the time this was filmed, back in 1983!...

Not just a great voice, but what a tight band Dio had at that time featuring a young Vivian Campbell (now in Def Leppard) ripping it up on guitar; Vinnie Appice, one of the best hard rock drumnmers ever; and Jimmy Bain, former Rainbow bassist & song writer.

True...though I keep hearing mumbles that his health isn't great. MH are touring though but then they pretty much always are doing a show somewhere. Lenny goes to a lot of London gigs too. I saw him several times at shows such as Cradel Of Filth.

The King is dead, long live the king!

His Rainbow years, his Black Sabbath years, never understood the bullshit Ozzy vs. Dio fight, Ozzy was fucked up so they made a little bit different music with RJD, different meaning Ozzy would not be able to sing RJD stuff and RJD sounded weird singing Ozzy stuff, some people just love to stir shit and can't see it as two totally different line ups, different eras and different music.

Can't imagine some nights without "Heaven and Hell" and "Mob Rules" on my stereo.

The Dio era - especially the first two records are a trademark 80's heavy metal, his reunion with Sabbath in 1992 - pretty heavy record, late Dio - as stellar as it goes.

Glad that I saw him live twice:

2005 in Warsaw with DIO where they played the whole "Holy Diver" album

2007 in Prague with Sabbath aka Heaven and Hell

Btw. I'd say he sounded like at 95 pct. of his Rainbow years, incredible power performance.

Here's "Neon Nights" that I always digged.

Thanks very much for that clip Jim. I had no idea that he'd been 'working' that long.
The Man on the silver Mountain has ascended.

We are all going down one by one. Everyone thought that Sabbath would die when Ozzy left.

WRONG !

I still have my old concert tickets (i keep them in a photo album) lots of good "souvenirs"

R.I.P

When I was 15, my dad's secretary had a daughter who worked for Dio. She was able to get me backstage passes to his show. This was the mid-80s and I was heavily into metal at the time so I thought this was about the coolest thing that could ever happen.

The show was classic Dio ... complete with a mechanical fire-breathing dragon that he would slay with a sword. Afterwards, I got to meet him backstage and he was really a nice guy. No attitude ... took time to chat with everyone. Class act.

Sad to see him go.

RIP Ronnie.

That sounds like a serious 'we are not worthy' moment.

We don't share a wall with anybody. Thus, we can play it loudly and unless we have doors and windows open it doesn't bother anybody.

Probably THE voice of metal along with Dickinson and Halford. I actually prefer BS with Dio, especially H&H. RIP!

It is difficult to argue with that.

surely miss him. RIP

I've been listening to Ronnie James Dio since 1984. He will surely be missed by many people. An awesome guy and a great singer. The music industry has clearly lost a true legend. :(

At least, he left us with plenty of good music and he did make it up to 67 years old....unlike so many other rock stars that tend to pass away so young. I bet he lived an awesome life.

RIP Ronnie.....
