Abortion activists get White House boost
Anti-abortion activists are increasingly optimistic

By Steve Schifferes
BBC News Online Washington correspondent

It was freezing cold on the Washington Mall as anti-abortion protests began their March for Life from the White House to the Supreme Court.

But in the bright sunshine, the thousands of anti-abortion activists waving signs and American flags were in a positive mood.

Abortion: A potent symbol of evil for the protesters
Not only did they have the White House in their sights, but they believed that the first time since the Supreme Court legalised abortion 30 years ago, they had a real friend in President George W Bush.

Joe Mowrici, a dentist from Cannonburg, Pennsylvania, had travelled with his son to be on the march.

He told BBC News Online that he was optimistic that the Bush Administration would support his cause.

He said that the logic of abortion was the logic of the Holocaust - so that even those without religious convictions should embrace the cause.

Joe Mowroci hopes the President will support him
And Mr Bush did not disappoint him, telling the rally by telephone to loud cheers that America should "value and protect the lives of innocent children waiting to be born".

Several Republican Congressmen vowed to take the fight to ban abortion to the floor of Congress - and win - this year.

Religion the key

But the argument about abortion - which is becoming one of the central political divides in America - is more than just about the single issue.

It is essentially a battle to refight the cultural wars of the l960s.

For the anti-abortionists, it is a religious and moral duty to oppose the "feminist abortionists who have killed 42 million unborn Americans" since l973, and to throw out the "hippie generation of judges" who had legalised abortion.

At the side of the rally the activists had planted hundreds of crosses, representing those deaths, while several activists strode through the crowd dressed as death and coffins adorned the stage.

Christine Bowler says her faith has guided her anti-abortion stance
Christine Bowler told BBC News Online that she had vowed to herself and her church that she would come on the march.

She has been a homemaker from Waldorf, Maryland, and raised two sons.

And she feels that fighting abortion is her way of finding God in her heart.

And religion is still a key motivating force for the protesters, many of whose banners displayed the names of the churches they were from rather than their states.

High-powered feminists

The night before these largely working class anti-abortion protesters from the Midwest took to the streets, a high-powered fundraising event was taking place for the pro-choice forces.

Democrats united at a rally to support the right to abortion
At the swanky Omni Shoreham hotel, 2,000 well-dressed activists had gathered to hear the six Democratic hopefuls for the Presidency denounce the Bush Administration as anti-women and pledge their support for the pro-choice forces.

It was a glitzy event, with three huge video screens and four stages projecting the images of the distinguished speakers, who included the actress Kathleen Turner and Ossie Davis, and the wife of former Vice President Al Gore.

There were two well produced videos, a history of the pro-choice movement and a new television commercial appealing for support.

The pro-choice activists had the advantage in style and glamour.

But with pro-life forces gathering strength, there was a nervousness in the air - about whether, 30 years after their victory, they had the ability to mobilise again to face their biggest political fight.

And as Democratic hopeful Richard Gephardt told the gathering, "we do need a strategy and a plan and a vision - and it begins by not ceding the moral high ground."

In the political battle to come, it will be whoever is more effective at mobilising the grassroots who will gain the advantage.

And in a religious America, it remains to be seen whether the church or Hollywood will provide more effective in rallying their supporters.

Maybe its time for Larry to offer another million dollar reward for the mistresses of current Republican officials.

Could you pass that on?

Hi Amber,

how's it going?

Jeese these right wing assholes will try to curb the laws on abortion, but it won't fly too far. Bush thinks the war and the economy might be bad for his administration, if he takes on the anti abortion fight he is gonna loose.

Porn free by 2005, shit he might not make it past 2004.

Hell Yeah I'll pass that on Gutterboy!

We do what we can to keep those gov't officials ~honest~ (yes, I know that's an oxymoron! ;>)

I definitely understand pornographers being Republican on financial issues...but I really don't understand the logic of any pornographer voting right-wingers into office. I mean geez - we make that precious valued cash from porn so why would anyone vote someone in who may save them some dough on taxes...but take their entire business away at the same time?!

Sorry to harp - it's just a pet peeve of mine. ;)

You've pretty much summed up my whole feeling on the issue. Some of the Republican's fiscal idea's are great, but the religious right has its tendrils wrapped so tightly around the party leadership that its now impossible to vote for fiscal conservatism without getting religious fanaticism along with it.

They don't need to pass an anti-abortion law. All they need to toast Roe is the confirmation of a single Scalia/Thomas clone to the Supreme Court.

That wouldn't totally outlaw abortion because States would still have the option of keeping it legal - California has passed a law saying that already - but alot of States would outlaw.

REPUBLICANS END THE USE OF CARS WITH BLUE INTERIORS! Now...read this article about abortion...

how silly.

If Roe v Wade is overturned it WOULD NOT outlaw abortion. It would make it up to the states to decide. I'm amazed that webmasters who usually fly with their eyes open are so easily gulled by these ultra liberal lies.
time spent worrying about this non-sense is time wasted.

Oh, and the word "porn" has been spoken about by the government about 10% as often as with the Clinton "I fuck up so much I gotta throw the extreme right a bone" administration.

The sky has been falling now for what, 6 years? its getting old.

Hey man!

On the biz front, we're releasing StudClub.com on Flynt Digital's affiliate program within the week. Kinda exciting because it's our first gay site added to the program and the beta testing is producing kick-ass numbers.

On a personal note - it's frinkin' frigid here! - from weather.com for my zip code:
15°F
Partly Cloudy Feels Like 1°F
But in a little over a week, I'll be chilling on the beach in Jamaica for the Negril Net Bash:

And I'm pretty psyched about leaving the snow behind!

What have you been up to?

Thank you for that flash of the blindingly obvious, but you are wrong. Roe being overturned WOULD effectively outlaw abortion in some places because that decision is the only thing stopping more than a few State legislatures from passing a complete ban.

I'm never wrong.
If the populace of those states feel that abortion is wrong and their elected officials out law it, who the fuck are YOU and who the fuck is the supreme court to interfere with the will of the people?

what you see as "blindingly obvious" is much more intricate than that. you just can't grasp it.

The court overstepped its bounds when it made that ruling.

Amber, I'm just not brainwashed into fearing republicans.
I'm far more fearful of the democrats' creating a class warfare so that I can be gouged for their overspending than anything the religious wacko right is going to do.
you should weigh what each side is capable of doing. the religious wackos can't gain a foothold in any normal circle of people. sadly, the democrats have a huge foothold in their "overtax the rich and show the poor democratic handouts" sceme.
its sad really that moderates like yourself can be tricked into believing the scary stories the liberals tell you about what *will* happen.

This is the reason the United States is a Republic, not a democracy. As you illustrated so well, democracy is really nothing but mob tyranny. In a Republic, people have inalienable rights (even if those rights have not always been recognized) which cannot be taken away by majority rule. Whether you agree with it or not, the Supreme Court ruled that abortion is one of those rights.

By "blindingly obvious" I meant it was obvious that abortion would not automatically become illegal if Roe were overturned.

12 Clicks,

You might be a little more fearful if you were around in the 80's when guys selling NORMAL xxx video tapes went to jail and had their cars and homes confiscated.

It's easy to play tough guy who's not afraid of anything when you are not a likely target and probably don't have that much to lose.

Trust me.....the large players with a lot to lose all worry about the Republicans and for good reason.....many of them were around in the 80's and saw what can happen with their own eyes or they have hired top attorneys who have educated them on the past and what they might face in the future.

Guess who was hired as soon as ashhahahahaha took over the JD? Many of the same DA's who prosecuted porn in the 80's.....

Coincidence? maybe....but being naive or overly optimistic will not keep you out of jail ;)

My advice....prepare for the worst and hope for the best....

I don't know if I would vote Democrat (would depend on the candidate) if I wasn't in this business, but since I am.....it's a very easy choice.
