Web 2.0 doesn't have anything to do with design.

of course not, but I'm 100% sure Mutt knows that and everybody knows more or less what he means

that design is all <table> based, even the horizontal rules are 1000 pixels wide gif's.

attractive enough design but it's about as far from Web 2.0 as it gets.

The only site that comes close is http://www.spacash.com - Their backend is neat. Doesn't look half arsed unlike a majority of affiliate programs, even though they have a few glitches here and there.

As for that windows site, looks like they pulled their clean design and opted for the "adult webmaster" look.

Here is how it was supposed to look:-

                http://i.imgur.com/8ZREa.jpg

But yeah. 2010 trends are all about accessibilty. Take a look at the biggest sites on Alexa. These are all clean and crisp sites with minimal graphical elements. Why you ask? That much traffic you need to keep your pages optimized and accessible for all audiences on various devices.

Another thing thats stopping websites from being user friendly is IE6. If clients still want support for this, this can cripple even the strongest web developers. This image from Smashing Magazine sums it down:-

It normally takes twice they amount of code just to fix shit in IE6. The stupid dumb shit browser doesn't even pass the first stage of the Acid3 test. Proves how shit the software development company that made IE6 really are.

Clients - You should be encouraging your surfers to upgrade to better browsers. Google and Youtube have already dropped support for IE6. Everyone else should follow suit. Fuck just render a big massive black box for IE6 users. These type of surfers are the scum of the universe.

just surf around those two you get a framework and your style points then go to jquerystyle.com and add the functionality Meta was talking about.

                            Read article here

They feature some great design examples also.

Indeed, in terms of web 2.0 mainstream is close to 3.0 now. Web 2.0 essentially means that the browser does not to reload when people do things on the site. The look and feel of web 2.0 may be what Mutt is looking for rather than actual functionality.

that's what i said in my original thread starter - 'web 2.0 looking' - the layout and design/graphic elements come first. the functionality/features would get added later by a front end designer good with javascript/jquery who can implement them with an existing backend. way beyond my modest skills.

You could also add a blog for every user, forums, folksonomy, tags, etc.
The point of the web 2.o bullshit is like others have said, usability as well as UGC and a sense of community.

Adding an apache solr search with auto complete and having the server to back it all up would top it off. Then moving on to other features of interactivity, activity streams, pm's and user relationships, related content blocks, advanced profile pages, etc. all while staying unique.

I have several projects in the works which use these techniques as well as others and they seem to encompass the whole web 2.0 namesake (which is actually what the www was designed for originally per it's originator) and they seem to be quite successful to this point.

I like how metaman jumps in and goes off about how web 2.0 has nothing to do with design.

Anyway, here's my attempt to spark some creativity for ya Mutt. A few are a bit more graphic intensive than they need to be, and some use graphics instead of normal text where they didn't have to - but I figured what the hell, you're designer could still get ideas from them.
