    Did ICQ's buyer overpay?

    http://paidcontent.org/article/419-a...187.5-million/

    The final price $187.5M

Do you think they overpaid? ICQ is only big in a handful of countries--the US is not one of them. Also, many chat
aggregators bypass its ads. What upsides do you guys see?

Maybe they'll change the ToS so they don't have the rights to share ANY conversation you have PUBLICLY.

They find a way of blocking all the other chat programs from containg ICQ so you are forced to use their own program - whether its a block or a fee doesn't really matter. Being less popular around the world isn't a problem if they are aiming directly at the Russian market.

Then they fill their own program with Russian advertising.

Then someone writes a small program like A-Patch for MSN that nukes the ads on ICQ and their business model goes down the shitter.

didn't read the details but these things are usually paid for over several years.

I do know big IT companies buy sites all the time just to close them so they can gobble market share

How has ICQ actually made money all these past years? I still use an old version, ICQ 2001b, and I never have seen any ads.
