Who plays the guitar? Bass players can play, too!

I love playing. I have an old Aria II from what I'm pretty sure is the mid 1980's. It's showing it's age, but it still makes great sound. I have a shitty amp that I bought when I was 11. Despite being low on adjustment knobs, it blew the house off the foundation when I turned the volumn all the way to 10 (i wanted to goto 11, but mine doesn't go that far). If my ICQ is up and I'm online but set to away, it's because I'm probably playing something by Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer or... Johnny Cash

I've been playing seriously for the better part of a year. As beautiful as a clean guitar can sound, I can't help but crank the distortion and pretend to be james hetfield. I'm buying a bass soon, mostly due to cliff burton, metallicas original base player.

Do you play the guitar, too? What kind do you play? Have any good songs that would be fun to play that you can link to?

Watch as this thread falls to page 6 before anyone even sees it :P

I play a modded lite ash telecaster and a really sweet Ibanez AS-73. Mostly jam to bluesy garage rock. Haven't been in a band in over a year though. The musician's section on craigslist has more flakes than the adult section. :P

I have a 1964 Eko Lancer that sounds like crap, a 1967 Repiso luthier guitar with original Schaller pickups that sounds like heaven and makes any hard-rock guitar sound like a flan (although you need to use .10 strings or thicker or it has tuning problems), a 1971 Fender Mustang (sounds horrible to be honest, I gotta fix it), a 1996 Ibanez Talman that sounds pretty decent and looks really nice, a 1997 Fender Jazzmaster, a Spanish concert guitar, an electroacoustic Takamine Santa Fe (the cheapest version and now has a broken neck so I have to repair it next week), another electroacoustic (Epiphone), a very awful Argentine acoustic guitar, a quite decent luthier bass... and that's it. I had a few more I sold or gave to friends, the only one I regret is a Hagstrom 68 (yes, I love vintage guitars). I barely play them these days and I don't even have an amp other than one of those Marshall micro-amps. Since someone stole my beloved Twin Reverb I didn't even care to buy a new amp.

I've played bass for a long time but haven;t touched it in a few years. I'm not even sure what brand I hve now, but they've always been off brands. Right now I just have your standard red body white pick guard fender rip-off I got at a garage sale for $25.

Someday I want to learn how to play six string. I have a really nice harmony patrician I found in a thrift store years ago, but like with my bass I havent had the time. It's old as dirt but very solid. A nice F hole acoustic guitar. If I had to guess I would guess early 50;s.

This one isn't mine, but looks pretty much the same:

For bass I enjoy playing songs that have alot of range. I get bored with alot of standard punk songs. Joy Division is great, bass at points takes the lead. Interpol is another band tha uses bass like that, kind of a Joy Division rip off actually.

I love listening to the Minute Men and I really appreciate a good fast moving walking bass line, but my hands aren't that strong so it takes alot of practice for me to bang that kind of shit out. Mike Watt is fuckng amazing. Self taught bassists are always the most interesting.

That's me in all black.

I used to get asked A LOT to fill in for bands that couldn't find good (even decent) bass players. Haven't played in a few years but every time I pick one up it only takes me about 10 minutes to get it back. I played for about 8 years.

HORRIBLE at guitar, I'm clumsy with fat, uncoordinated fingers so being able to slap and tickle a bass was much more my speed.

Just some stuff to think about if you're serious about playing bass and not just looking to thrash on something that has thicker strings.

I started playing when I was 9 years old and collecting when I could finally afford to own more than one at a time.

The two most interesting in my collection are the first two from the left. The blonde electric is a 1953 National California I found in Nashville back in the 1970's. And the Gibson SG next to it is an original 1967. The only amp I use these days is that little fender sidekick -reverb 20. Started in rock bands in my youth and evolved to mostly jazz over the years.
I still play every day for relaxation.

For electrics I have a 90's 10 top 24 fret PRS that has the most powerful passive humbuckers I have ever heard, so powerful it seems difficult to do anything but solo on it because it is just so powerful, unless you turn the volume down but that seems gay.

Recently I got an SRV stratocaster that I just love for strumming on, the neck fits my hands perectly.

For acoustics I have a autographed 1978 Alvarez Yairi that is just beautiful with lots of exotic wood and inlays, its been beat to hell but still plays nice with a very warm tone almost like its running through a chorus pedal.

Recently I got a Taylor 814-ce and the thing sounds and plays so perfectly in every way that it has almost no personality. Maybe in a few years it will develop more of a personality, we'll see.

Finally I have an Ibanez sound gear 6 string bass that I fronted my first band with, I didnt know how to play bass but neither did anybody else so I bought a 6 string and played it like a guitar.

Then there's an old 60's Kay banjo laying around that was my grandfathers. I play it once a year or so, I got a nice banjo roll going after a long time trying and I like to do hillbilly versions of "along the watchtower" and other similar tunes. Nobody wants to hear it but fuck them.

I have a couple of guitars. I have played for 30 years but I wouldn't call myself a great guitar player anymore... I don't play much anymore because I am so busy with making a living. I have a Mexican Made Strat, an Indian Made Jackson Soloist, a Samick TR-2 (kind of like an SG) and my baby... a 1995 Faded Royal Blue Paul Reed Smith Custom 22 that is hand signed by Paul Reed Smith. I sold a Warrior Knight Zebra to buy the PRS... The Warrior was a much prettier guitar but you can't even compare how much better this Custom 22 sounds in comparison.

I have 2 amps... a Carvin Legend 100W Head with an Ampeg 4x12 cab that has 2 Celestion Vintage 30s and 2 Celestion Greenback 75s installed diagonally as well as a Line 6 Flextone II Combo with floorboard that I picked up for $150 used (normally they are $600 used).

The strat

The warrior I sold.

I don't have any pics of the jackson... it's nothing special anyway besides the MOP sharkfin inlays and reverse headstock.

I should mention that I bought this PRS on a forum called Birds and Moons (birdsandmoons.com)... if you are considering buying a PRS I highly recommend checking there first because you can get some incredible deals.

Been playing for about 25 years now. Gibson Les Paul Standard from 1988. Love that guitar! Have a bunch of acoustics. I favor cedar top acoustics for the warmth.

Always writing and playing originals. Rocking stuff. Recording again now finally

when I have more time I would like to take serious flamenco lessons. I can listen to good flamenco forever.

I play bass... I have an Aria pro II

Haven't touched it in awhile but now I am about to whip it out and see if I still have NoFX the decline still up to par.... got some good bass parts fo sho...

Sometimes i feel around make up a bass line and then freestyle over it while im playing, when I was in highschool I started doing this and my parents thought i was retarded or something, jumping on the bed freestyling and rappin vanilla ice over my bass guitar wow i did so many drugs back then (shrooms).... lol

wow those guys are good, lol. I'd love to learn how to use the slap technique, it sounds amazing. I'm pretty much going to buy the cheapest 5 string bass I can find, and then learn to play with that. My finger speed is pretty fast, because I tend to screw around with my 6 string quite a bit, playing it like you would play a bass. Now I just need to find one that is good for someone who's going to learn to play stuff like for whom the bell tolls first :P

anyone have any recommendations for a good bass amp? Not competing with guitars or drums, just something to learn on. I don't want to use my amp I have now, I've heard you can damage them if you turn it up too loud with a bass guitar.

Mike Watt is kicking ass. Saw him w. the Stooges in 2008.

Listened to Joy Division for a bit, too much of a legend to talk about it, interesting I lately read something about Jane's Addiction they mentioned them as an early inspiration. So maybe Jane's are what would become of Joy if they lived in surfin LA and mixed all those interesting drugs with sex as Jane's.

I got my first bass at the age of 16, it was the most crappy bass ever, local build, like 25 years old with rusty strings.

I intensely practiced for about one and a half year and when I switched to more of a regular instrument I was regarded as a superbly technical bass player cause I always had to fight the rusty strings that were like half an inch far from the neck

Technique means shit anyway, I'm always more interested in the song as a whole, and in the right groove, drive and timing.

Great days as we played in the garage my last year of high school around 2000 or so, lots of booze, some early marijuana which I didn't smoke, cause I always had the scariest out of earth experiences ever.

A buddy of mine that played with me now twice won the country's best guitarist contest and runs a jazz / soul combo named Apoache
http://www.apoache.com/category/cd-flyaway/

The drummer is doing web design now and is washed out of weed.

I had a line up for a new band last year, but it felt apart, everybody is stuck with their jobs and crap and there's no decent drummer around.

Anyone has experience with Squier basses? Heard only good feedback so far and could be a good choice for practicing I guess
