I've given quite a few history lessons since moving to North America. One of the common responses I get when I tell people I was born & raised in South Africa is 'why aren't you black then?' I certainly don't expect people to know every little detail about the history of other countries because I definitely don't. But how can you not be aware of colonialism at all?

Okay, funny enough, and not trying to be Fatfoo, but you can understand her confusion if she just heard about it in passing. Mandela was held on Robben Island, a prison sometimes referred to as "South Africa's Alcatraz." Like Alcatraz, the prison was on an isolated island, and is a museum now.

I just did the Alcatraz tour a few months back when I visited. Fascinating place, although a bit smaller than I imagined. The Indian history with the island was pretty amazing.

I want to do it but I didn't know you had to book in advance. At least that was the case when I was there and then I couldn't get a ticket in time before I left.

Two years ago I just walked up and bought a ticket. Not sure if it's changed, it was mid week if that means anything.

It was about four years ago for me and they were requiring pre-booking. No idea how normal that is but it was the case that time. I was disappointed but it gives me a reason to go back. It was such a nice city.
