Someone told me that it was the ordinance code number in some police district for a pot related offense. So it made it into the common slang for weed.

No one really knows where the 420 came from. I heard it was some sort of meeting time for a bunch of stoner grad students in Berkeley.Comment

I just did a quick google on it and can't really see a definitive answer, so who knows.
