I'm officially sick and off work.

This week I went to the State doctor who checks claims for invalid benefits and she has ruled that I'm unable to work and have been unable to work since the cancer treatment started. So I'm getting sickness benefit.

Not sure how much it is but it will be a nice amount in a lump sum because they back dated the payments to last year. Will also get a disabled sticker.

I'm not a sponger because I've paid into the system for decades, both here and the UK so it's my entitlement.

What ever you say about the benefits of a State or Private Health Scheme the system we have in the EU covers those who are down as well as those who are up. Shudder to think what this type of cover would cost in the US.

Jealous? Do you have cancer? He's going through treatment. I suspect Paul's jealous of you in some ways!

Good luck with your health Paul

Best of luck fightin' the cancer Paul! And grats on getting a little bit of your cash back that you've pumped into the system. There's nothin' wrong with that!

Buy yourself a big comfy lawn chair with some nice cushions and enjoy the garden, haha

There are good things about the US, just not health care unless you're rich and don't need 18 months off work to fix it.

I feel you pain Paul, as a Brit who lost his medical insurance in the USA due to a pre existing condition and a divorce i may have to fly back to the good old UK to have an operation. On the NH its free because like you i paid in for around 30 years . Here in the USA without insurance the operation will cost me $166,000.00 for just 3 days in hospital. I agree the USA is a great country but the health system sucks big time...

Said operation would be free if you are poor and if you are not poor and without insurance then you are not required to pay the bill but you are required to pay at the bill.

If one is ruled to be unable to work here in the US one then becomes eligible for one of several different programs that will provide one with income...the primary program is Social Security Disability.

Will probably be another 6 months to a year before I'm fully recovered. My next goal is to start eating solid food. Getting fed via a tube in my stomach at the moment. No fun at all.

But at least I get some money to keep me alive and the drugs and liquid food become free.

how can a country like Czech that's not that wealthy afford that?

you own your own business, your paysites are still up and making money, you have employees and a wife who can run your content business - i really think there should be a means test, if because of your illness your business is failing without you then I can see them giving you the payout. but if you're doing fine then I don't think the government should be paying anything. social programs should be for only those people who need them whether you paid into them or not.

i'd take it too if i was in your position but i wouldn't have a beef with the government if they ruled me ineligible because i have income and savings to get me through a crisis/illness.

I think it's OK to have govt health care systems like that in countries that don't want vibrant economies. But, I also think there should be other countries that prize freedom above all else and leave their health care to the private sector. That way, people can choose the type of government they want.

Only if we could move to any country we wanted at any point and pay taxes (or not) in any country we wanted...

Those poor Canadians and Brits though, gov healthcare and totally failed economies...

Sadly like me they get old and as they do health problems arise and the ability to pay diminishes. All the money the healthy paid in is wiped out and they are left to fend for themselves.

As Sly said I paid for it and it's time to collect. If we had nothing coming in the allowance would be greater so the Government is taking that into consideration. Yes the business is still doing well but we are unable to shoot and that costs us a lot of money. What would the US Government do if I was in the US. Take our house, money in the bank and the business before we qualified?

And don't be fooled the Czech Republic isn't doing as badly as you imagine.

Not if you paid into Social Security...you would be entitled to Social Security disability benefits. I receive Social Security disability benefits as well as well as benefits from the VA for being a 100% disabled vet (which adds up to about $4000.00 per month) and I own my house...have a savings account with a substantial sum of money in it and substantial investments in the stock market.

We have the freedom to choose here in the EU as well. I had it in the UK and the care was excellent and here I switched to the International plan. So had the choice of flying home and going 18-24 months of treatment there, paid for by Bupa, or staying here with my family.

I found the charges less than the comparable cover in the US because they would fall back on the Public Sector hospitals when the need was there. They don't have private hospitals capable of open heart surgery for instance.

We have the freedom to choose the Governments we want over here in the UK and the freedom to buy that extra health cover as well if we feel we need it. Most don't. Exercising their freedom and right to choose.
