RAID with Western Digital Green drives?
I'm thinking about buying 5 or 6 of the 2 TB green WD drives and using the RAID that backs everything up a little on each disc so if 1 dies you are ok but if 2 die you are totally fucked. Any thoughts? The only person that I know in the real world that bought the green drives said they are so much slower that I should not expect my write speed to be any faster than it currently is without Raid.
Thanks in advance.

RAID doesn't "back up", it just provides some redundancy so a disk failing doesn't knock you out... you still need a reliable backup solution.

The reason RAID isn't a backup is because a PSU dying or an OS going bonkers can instantly trash your data and/or drives... you still need a separate backup to be able to restore from in the event of a catastrophic corruption of your data or failure of your RAID array.

I've been pretty loyal to WD over the years but I have to say that I will never buy another WD Green drive after having several of them fail on me.
One of their warranty replacements took around 5 months because, as their rep said: "Our department is allotted only so many drives and right now those drives are on backorder." |

Whether you use WD green drives, red drives or rainbow colored drives. I've learned never depend on one backup solution for mission critical data and consistent cool temperature is the key to extending the life of a hard drive. The more often the drives go up and down in temperature the shorter the life expentency.

Agreed--not a good idea. And you should have 2 solutions for backups anyway.

Yay! one real answer. Pretty good for GFY. Would you use WD black drives?
