Economists Urge Government to Stop War on Piracy

Quote:
In an advisory report two economy professors are urging a government to rethink new anti-piracy legislation currently being drafted. The professors argue that harsher anti-piracy measures will only benefit the large media companies and prominent artists, at the expense of users and upcoming artists.

hopefully politicians will realize that current attempts to change the laws is the equivalent to trying to outlaw vcrs before the movie industry got their head out of their asses and started copying the porn industry (putting their stuff on the cassettes and selling it to vcr owners)

Why would upcoming artists not profit from stricter copyright laws?
People used to make a lot of money back in the days. If stricter copyright laws were able to turn back time, new artists should be happy about it.

I use the free stuff on internet to choose what I like and then buy it on DVD/CD. I can't imagine buying a CD like ages ago, when I didn't even know whats there and mostly realized it sucks afterwards. Now you just have to go to youtube, find the songs, artists and buy the high quality original if its good. Same with movies. I think it helps the sales. But thats just me, everyone has a different opinion on this.

Some webmasters held out hope against the tube onslaught thinking that the proliferation of shitty blurry FLVs would force surfers (who are impulse buyers) to buy the HD version.

This assumes a) there's an HD version b) the videos are watermarked and c) the shadier tubes won't tube HD vids.

Based on some posts on this board, apparently there's tubes featuring full-featured HD. Since adult promo is an arms race, there's a high likelihood that this will be the new standard.... Where to next?

Also Hollywood is just too greedy...DVD is pretty much dead, yet they still overprice it, movies on DVD aren't worth more than $5, yet they still sell some for $20-30. And much more in Europe.

Be interesting to know what percentage of the new artists are creating music with pirate software seeing as a lot of it is very expensive for someone who is essentially just doing a hobby until they manage to create something worth listening to.

think about this
the mpaa was claiming that the vcr was to the entertainment industry what boston strangler was to women home alone.

they tried to get the import laws changed vcr could not be brought into the country.

what won out was the proof that the vcr created more jobs then they lost (people selling/ fixing etc them vs lost POTENTIAL jobs)

funny thing is when the government shut down the cry baby bullshit and the mpaa had to look around for an economic solution the vcr turned into a money maker that exceeded all other revenue streams combined

if they had turned back time, that revenue stream would not exist today.

The efforts to stop piracy are almost futile.

People download movies and music online for free.

Who cares about the music or movie industry? screw them... heh

we should probably discuss what effects it will have on the porn industry... it sounds to me that effects on this industry will be positive.. can anyone form a decent argument showing that effects would actually be negative for this industry?

ok don't like the vcr how about the mp3

when diamond rio was accused of piracy for ripping cd into mp3 solid state disk was expensive like 5 /mb. It primary use was in enterprises who wanted to speed up performance of databases.

they one that case established the right of format shifting.

as a result of that new legal technology, solid state disk became more popular in consumer devices. That mass production resulted in a significant price drop for equipment

the modern day solid state disk sell for less then 5/gb now

our ipods can store tv shows, movies and 10,000 songs
our cellphones are basically mini computers
without that new fair use solid state disk would never have hit critical mass and all of those new marketplaces would not exist.

hundreds of trillions of dollars of revenue would have to be sacrificed to protect millions of dollars in revenue.

I would have to agree that makes no economic sense.

a multimillion dollar organization is spending millions to produce propogranda that makes "piracy" the greatest ill to ever occur.

they spend millions lobbying politicans to change the laws in their favor

They aggressively demand that police go after these pirates

remember one thing every single time a new fair use has been established the copyright holders bullied politicans and police into going after fair use under the guise of going after pirates.

It only took a couple of small news articles and court ruling to completely stem the tide of this abuse.

so one article by an independent economist urging politicans not to get suckered by the bogus statements is worth 1000 bad news articles forced into existance by mpaafia deep pockets

good job
