Of course they'd have as much to gain by calling him smart as you would calling anyone smart. Their egos, and yours, couldn't take it.

                                                                                                                                                                                                      Capone built an empire that ran long after he died. Furthermore, after YEARS of running it and the full weight of the US government with limitless resources to nab him pursuing him the most they could come up with was tax evasion. He wasn't prosecuted for a single criminal act.

                                                                                                                                                                                                      As for Kennedy, all he did was one up Capone by not only NOT getting caught for anything, but getting his son elected President and another nearly so. Not bad for a stupid bootlegger.
