I grew up in the housing projects in Brooklyn as a white Jewish kid that got along with everyone regardless of race or ethnicity. I hung out with my Black and Puerto Rican friends in the PJ's and my white/Italian/Irish friends in "the neighborhood" ... Canarsie. You couldn't get a more authentic Brooklyn neighborhood in the 80's. It was where the movie Goodfellas was based on ... in real life! The characters in that movie were the fathers, uncles and grandfathers of my friends in the neighborhood. "Big Paulie" lived around the corner from me ... a couple blocks away from the housing projects!

Anyway, outside the projects, Canarsie was full of Italians and Irish kids that would try and beat up my Black and PR friends if they "walked up the wrong street".

It was ugly ... and I hated it. I can't even count how many times I got called a N!GG ER lover from MY WHITE FRIENDS in the neighborhood or almost got stomped or batted out for trying to stop them from beating down my friends from the PJ's!

And the same was true for white kids from the neighborhood trying to come into the projects.

It was a racial and ethnic divide!
