I love this thread! good reading. Love that youtube video too... I like Avatar, I just think Star Wars was "original" and Avatar was a combination rip off of other films. Yes, Lucas mirrored dog fights in his battles, but he created new visuals, concepts and a nice story w/heart.

I can't wait for them to re release Star Wars in 3D. Now that is a space battle that was made for 3D.

I know how it works. At the end of the day it ends up being 50-50. The theaters have actually gotten the higher % now for weeks.

The 3 new ones sucked balls, so avoid them. (well part 3 was ok at times)

The original 3 are all classics though! :pimp

I just find it silly for someone to argue that Star Wars is the bigger blockbuster IF you adjust dollar figures to modern times. What matters the most is the money the movie actually makes and Star Wars made less at the theater than AVATAR and Titanic.

How old are you? Don't you understand that the number of dollars is irrelevant if you don't take into account the value of the dollar itself.

cool list.

Are you kidding me? $15? Are you seriously bitching about $15? You can't even buy 2 mixed drinks for $15 in NC unless you are buying well drinks.

fatfoo 03-06-2010 11:19 AM

This Avatar movie is unbelievable. It has exciting special effects.

And so many spoofs, parodies and porn versions of the blue creatures have been done already. What a success.

fatfoo 03-06-2010 11:21 AM

Blue - that's the color of success.

So with that logic I guess everyone that saw the star wars movies needs to send MORE money to Lucas so his revenue will be up to date with the current value of the dollar.

Good one.

Good one.

You still don't get it?!?

They don't need to send more money, the absolute value of the money he got then is equivalent to much more today.

Slappin Fish 03-06-2010 12:14 PM

Maybe this can help you understand the basic concept of inflation

You are attaching today's ticket prices back to the days of the Stars Wars release. I understand that.

While it may be fun to say " what if " I find it silly to say that Star Wars is the bigger money maker because of that. What MATTERS is the actual amount made at their respective times.

If you're going to take the liberty of adding today's ticket prices to that movie back then I'm going to use the same logic and take the liberty of saying that if the Star Wars movie, as it is, premiered today against AVATAR it would've been a HUGE flop and laughed at for it's hokey special effects while AVATAR with it's state of the art special effects would still be the biggest grossing movie of all time.

If someone asked you how much money you've made so far in your life would you add up all your paychecks and answer with the total or would you adjust for inflation first? :winkwink:

What the few % of people feel about the story line or the effects dont matter, it's kinda like having a few schlep webmasters who live in mommies basement hate on the design of your site.

Then you have those who hate anything that is new and innovative, these people have a mindset that is a mix of the unabomber and a jealous bitter girl that just got dumped.

Then you have those guys that regardless of the situation they seem to always say "20 years ago things where better", ya know the people who in 20 years from now when another movie will do 2 billion will scream "this movie is a joke compared to the movie avatar back in the day".

The people have spoken and thats all that matters!

bingo. :thumbsup

This is the last post where I will try to explain inflation to you.

If the dollar tanks tomorrow and we have hyperinflation, mediocre movies will surpass Avatar in number of dollars...

You can't compare figures when the unit of measure isn't constant.

Why would I need to adjust since I am not comparing???

Only if somebody asked you to compare the money you made with somebody else would you need to adjust for inflation. And the guy who made 1 million dollars in the fifties was way richer than the one who made the equivalent amount in the nineties.:2 cents:

You say when comparing you need to adjust for inflation. I say you don't.

If you're right why is AVATAR now at the top of the list? The answer is because AVATAR made the most money and they don't take inflation into consideration. It's just that simple and the point I've been trying to make.

We're talking about to different things and I give up as well :upsidedow
