I have sprint now was thinking about switching to verizon and they said I'd need to pay an extra $15 tethering fee. So I don't need to pay that?

My Sprint Samsung Moment is rooted and there's an app that turns it into a WiFo hotspot.

This is available for any rooted Android phone. Well worth the time spent tinkering just for this app.

I can flip it on and connect the lappy on and off it in just like I did there. Quick and easy to run and connect to.

shitty thing is you can't use your phone while its tetherd. for an extra 20 bucks a month you can get one of those internet sticks. better speed and it doesn't stop you from using your phone.

I use my touch pro to tether all the time, verizon I think in some cases is $25 depends on your plan, mine is only $10 a month because I am grandfathered in from Alltel and I was with alltel for 7 years. But there is a program that will get you around that, but I don't remember the name of it. A lot of phones will tether, they just don't tell you they will. The first one I ever used to tether was a motorola v60. Even if you have a cellphone that tethers, that little stick will cost $60 with the data plan, they say the stick is faster but I have checked my phone against a laptop in the mall with a stick and the speed was the same.

I tether my BlackBerry on Verizon with TetherBerry. No monthly fees. The speed is the same as using the dedicated Mobile Broadband device.

I have no issue making phone calls with with program I mentioned above on a rooted Android phone.

I've driven from my place in WNY to Boston and we had wireless wifi the entire trip and used any other app on the phone that we needed.

I just logged on using one of my iMacs and got a better speed reading:

.91 mbps down
.12 mbps up

I've got better reception in my office.

tethering? I used to do it with my Nokia e65i I had with Voce (3rd party wireless provider) and was pretty decent, but the best part was connecting through bluetooh

When I got the iPhone, it doesnt allow you to connect, unless you do some hack, and i dont want to go that path for some shitty AT&T network.

Rather, I just use the MiFi from Verizon... its great

How do you like the Samsung Moment overall? I checked one out at the Sprint Store and I am seriously considering purchasing one. I like the Android OS and the availability of apps, and the slide out keyboard for texting. Was rooting the phone difficult? I like the idea of using my phone as a wifi hot spot on locations. And you can definitely make or rteceive a voice call while the laptop is stil tethered to it?

I tether my iPhone to my laptop when out and about. Much faster than Safari on the iPhone. A lot faster than I was expecting.

I do whenever I'm on my summer cabin.
It's just as good as broadband, I can even link my PS3 via a router and play online without issues. It's 5mbps, however since my cottage is in the archipelago the connection is a bit shakey when there's a storm/hard wind.

Then again, I'm in Europe, so that answer is somewhat pointless. I just wanted to gloat.

Make sure your plan allows for this as last I saw/heard no provider in Canada allowed tethering as part of your data plan, and as you know Canada likes to kill you on data charges.

well where i am you gotta pay 15 bucks a month to use the tethering, for an extra 20-25 dollars you can get a stick. i pay 44 bucks a month for mine (of course that also depends on how much bandwidth i use). i was under the impression you couldn't use the phone if it was tethered but apparently i am wrong so i guess there is no real advantage.

I love it. The screen is great. It's quick and snappy too. The 1.5 android sucks and really is lacking some important features. The new update to 2.1 should be coming soon. A group of hacker/developers will probably have a fully working version before Sprint puts out their update.

Rooting the phone is easy. Just a few downloads and some simple instructions to follow and you're good. If you get one and are interested, I can point you in the right direction.

And yes, you can answer a call and multitask as usual when you are tethered.

I was in my office in a part of the house with bad reception. I'm getting speeds closer to yours this morning.
