Wal-Mart to Acquire Vudu
Walmart has reportedly agreed to buy online movie service Vudu, The New York Times reported Monday.
The paper had few additional details, except that both companies started informing movie studios of the decision on Monday.
A Vudu spokesman said the company had no comment at this time. "We have no comment at this time, but Vudu is working on an official response," a company spokesman said.
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year, Vudu announced that it would abandon its hardware business for partnerships with established manufacturers. Sharp, Sanyo, and Toshiba said they would release products like Blu-ray players and HD TV's with built-in access to the Vudu service. Prior to CES, Vudu was available in about eight products from LG and Mitsubishi ? a number that jumped to 50 at the annual electronics conference.
The Vudu set-top box was released in 2007, and provided access to the company's online library of movies, which could be purchased or rented.
In November, Vudu released a firmware update that incorporated Wikipedia into the service via embedded links in the film descriptions.
