    Memories of Rhodesia

What an amazing state it was - Rhodesia, I'm big fan of this small but splendid country that is no more. They fought bravely for 15 years, defending their right to rule their land how they see fit - which was the idea of a "responsible goverment" were voting rights were given based on person's property/income and education (regardless of the race), instead of the black majority "one man - one vote" rule which was pressed for by, basically, all of the rest of the world.

Once the jewel of the African continent, the breadbasket of South Africa, having strong diversified economy and the 1st world living standards, the country went down the shitter under the black majority rule in about 20 years. Disfunctional economy, disfunctional infrastructure, 90% unemployment rate, 1/3 of population is in exile, 1/2 of population is HIV infected, outbreaks of cholera and systematic political oppression.

Any real Rhodies on this board? Please tell us one of your infamous "when we were in Rhodesia" stories.

When I studied graphic arts in school, for my project, I produced a large lithograph of Mad Mike Hoare with a "Be A Man Among Men" banner underneath -- the instructor was like, "who is THAT?"

      Close enough ;)

Hooray Apartheid! It wasn't all that bad. Just ask Nelson Mandela.

There was no aparthied in Rhodesia. 70% of the Rhodesian army were blacks, the country also boasted Africa's most educated black population and the highest living standards for blacks in all Africa.

Their policy was to educate black citizens and give them voting rights when they're ready to rule responsibly. If they were just left to their own ways, instead of insisting on granting full voting rights to all blacks immediately - by now we'd already see the black majority rule in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) anyway, but without entire country destroyed.

Ha! Yes, my father grew up in Rhodesia & told me lots of heart warming stories of the 'house boys' that looked after their property living in huts without plumbing and electricity. They were also threatened with knives when they stepped out of line.

But I hate Mugabe as much as I hate Apartheid & Colonialism. That fucker is senile, drunk with power & has absolutely destroyed the country and erased any improvements they made after the last few decades. I'm also so angry that the A.N.C has not taken a firmer stand against him. Zimbabwe supported the struggle in South Africa and the A.N.C are acting like a bunch of ostriches with their heads in the sand while their brothers and sisters suffer under Mugabe.
