Former USMC Scout Sniper here; I can lay down 10 shots in less than 10 seconds all under one 3 inch spotter at 300 yards with an iron site. Better keep over 1000 yards on me if you wanna escape a single shot from a .50cal but you'd be safer at about 3000 yards... and for the record, I'm well hung

That's a tricky question as the size of the target varies of course :P Most .50 cal shots are taken at vehicles or equipment (It's actually against the Geneva convention to fire a large caliber round at a person)... In addition the .50 call is such a large round fired at such a velocity that it will actually take a person's face off even if you miss by a foot...
That being said longest shot on target (large) with a .50 cal was at around 2,000 yards.
To a point target with an M40A1 7.76mm (has a scope) it's 1,000 yards. It's not that you can't hit targets farther away but the maximum effective range for that weapon is 800 - 1000 yards... weapon lists at 800 but any scout sniper will tell you 1,000 ;) It's ideal to be well within your max effective range before ever taking a shot. As an example part of your testing to become a scout sniper you have to stalk a target from 1,000 yards to within 200 yards and take two shots without being spotted.
After max effective range the round slows, drops faster, and is subject to TONS of wind... it's just not accurate so. (The .50 cal's max effective range is around 1,800 yards)
For what it's worth it's a ton of fun and I could teach anyone to fire that accurately. It's very much a zen thing. The real skills of a sniper are tested in stalking a target... LOTS of patience and good ghillie suit skills)
