Ron Paul for President, says Conservative Political Action Conference poll

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/poli...xzz0gF 9qO80y

Quote:
Sorry, Sarah, it's Ron Paul in a sweep!

Conservatives want the Texas congressman as their next President.

Paul was preferred by 31% of voters in the Conservative Political Action Conference's presidential preference straw poll yesterday, one of the strongest wins in CPAC history.

Sarah Palin, who skipped the group's conference, came in a distant third with 7% of the vote.

Paul ran for President in 2008 but didn't come close to claiming the GOP's nomination.

Mitt Romney, after topping CPAC's poll for the past three years, came in second, with 22% of the 2400 votes cast.

Paul's resistance to government spending resonated this year.

It means nothing. The previous three years, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Mitt Romney won the CPAC straw poll.

While Paul has some great ideas and is a smart guy, he really has no interest in being president so there is no way he would run a campaign that could actually win.

CPAC is pretty irrelevant actually. The election will be decided by the independents. CPAC helps get the base fired up, but they will have to get a candidate who can connect with the moderate independents if they want to win.

He's not a loon, his ideas are fundamentally sound and he makes Bernanke and the rest of the mainstream economists look like tools. He follows the Austrian School of Economics and in today's America, that is mistaken for lunacy. I wanted him to run in 08 and I sure as hell will vote for him in 2012. The man is an economic genius and HE has the most potential to turn our situation around.

Hmmm, not sure if I would call him an economic genius but he does have some interesting ideas. However I don't see him winning the nomination although I do enjoy listening to him in the debates.

Ron Paul... I voted for him. I don't agree with everything he says, I'm very much pro choice person. But the rest of what he says... nobody can debate it.

I did too Doc... interesting statistic... If only prior and active military were aloud to vote then Ron Paul would currently be president. There's a very good reason for that... People who have fought to defend freedom have also lost it in order to fight for it. They have a better perspective on what freedom is and why it's so important.

Yeah love him too .. he did break those 2 records of getting donations on a single day.. and he got more donations from military personnel than any other candidate in 2008.

Still don't know if he would get the nomination, maybe so though after everyone fell for the obama rockstar thing.

The only problem about Ron Paul is his stance on foreign and domestic security which, I'm sorry to say, is weak and borderline naive.

I disagree... I'm on RP's side on this one and I'm former military... Right now the President has complete control over war. That breaks everything the constitution says but because they're not calling it war, they can wage war indefinitely. It's playing a major roll in bankrupting this country and it's completely unjustified...

We are not the world's police and if you take a look at the rest of the world's view of the US that's exactly what we're doing. It's not our place... I don't believe because someone says that they're going to build a nuclear weapon that we should immediately confront them and say no. On who's authority? All of a sudden we have to sanction everyone "OR ELSE"?!

All we're doing is driving up debt and pissing people off... It's not naive... the government would have you believe that everyone they don't like is a threat and that it's an imminent threat that needs to be dealt with. Don't buy the hype.

Agree. But what do you mean you WANTED him to run in 08? He did... He was on the ballot... And I DID vote for him.

The sad fact of the matter is this: America's average joe couch potatoe thinks there are only 2 choices. Democrat and Republican. You can't even bring up a third choice because it shuts their mind down and they fight doggedly for the side they have chosen, even when they cant tell you why they have chosen that side.

Here is why he can't win.

He refuses to take any kind of corporate money and he won't get into the "machine" of politics to raise money. While that may be honorable, it is just not reasonable if you want to win. Obama will have hundreds of millions to campaign with. Without allowing the machine to work for him and get him the big money, he can't compete. It is kind of like if you start a baseball team and only spend 12 million on player salaries. You can't expect to compete with the Yankees and Red Sox who spend 200 million on players.

Until he accepts the fact that if he wants to play in the big game he is going to have to play by some of their rules he will never be more than a niche candidate. I think he knows this and embraces it. He knows he can't win, but he runs anyway because it helps him sell books and it is easier being the guy with the great ideas when you don't have to actually carry them out than it is being the guy who makes the promises and has the ideas and then actually has to deliver them. Obama is feeling that pain right now.

If you look at the national debt and how much we spent for this war, you'll see that it's but a fraction of the problem, not a major role.

This is where I disagree. Dennis Prager said it best. As the world's #1 power(or former #1), we became the world's police. What you're suggesting isn't realistic, it's naive in my opinion. For example, if someone says they're going to build a nuclear weapon, the consequences of NOT doing something about it are far graver than acting on it. On whose authority? This isn't moral relativism, this isn't "who are you to"....None of that crap makes any kind of sense in the world we live. We are the world's police and sometimes we overstep our boundaries, but in certain threats, such as nuclear capabilities, I don't believe there's much to overstep because NOT overstepping might lead to more problems than anyone can handle.

Again, look at the war budget and look at the shit we've been doing for 30 years. It's a fraction. And this is a really naive way of looking at things. The government makes me believe radical muslims are a threat because the government just doesn't like them? I'm going to go ahead with a big "no" on that one. I haven't heard any kind of valid argument for what you're talking about.
