First dedicated server

My server in TO is hanging all the time, I think it is time for me to get my own dedicated server and colocate in San Diego.

Any advice? Good entry level specs? Cost? Skillsets I need? Cpanel or not?

I wouldn't "co-locate." There is no real reason for you to own the server. But AmeriNOC is in San Diego and I would recommend them on colo and renting anyway.

AmeriNOC seems to be a bit confusing on their pricing. For metered, $900 a month, or unmetered $1800 one time fee with no monthly fee. It seem odd that they would have no monthy fee with unmetered...

Oh the fun of learning fbsd and how to set up your own nameservers, security etc. If you don't know what's up go with managed or hire an admin.

Hi,

One of the plans you are talking about is a Dual Xeon Quadcore plan that includes 300 MBPS, the fee listed is the monthly fee for that particular plan, below that in red it says "Setup = $0.00".

If you email me at sales < AT > Amerinoc.com and let me know what type of server configuration and the amount of monthly bandwidth you need I can give you a custom quote.

If you?re not in the hosting business don?t even think about co-location. Take advantage of the deals offered by the hosting companies here. Spend your time making money and more money rather than babysitting a server.

+1 for leasing rather than colocating. Colo costs more upfront and will drive you mad if you have even minor issues that require physical access. And if the host goes bust you may have trouble getting your server back. I'd only use colo if you have an unusual hardware configuration.

Amerinoc is great, and they are super knowledgeable, making them a perfect company
to provide you with a dedicated server. I say a dedicated server because as others have
said, unless you are or employ a professional server admin, a colocated server would
have nobody as the admin, or you could try to do your own admin, in which case you
would have clueless newbie as an admin, messing things up.

there is usually no point in single server colo unless your building something really high end.

colocation can be very rewarding to own and operate your own server and in some facilities to be able to visit it. It can also save you money over the long term. However, the downside is you most likely are going to be responsible for your own hardware replacements and skills needed to manage your machine. So, colocation has an upside and a downside.

Actually I haven't had an admin other than myself for the last 5 years and I've been doing ok...until last month when my server is totally crashing. :-)

And I actually think this is why I want colocation instead of managed. Right now my admin, on my "managed" server pretty much told me I'm on my own.

So without admin = ok, with admin=ok...I am just looking around now.
