Interesting combination. I wonder which one scared more people in their time.

imagine if Sid could have actually played bass, he might have done more with himself. his behavior and drug use was partially to cover up the fact he had no talent or skill, he just pretended the part. And i say this as old school punk rocker.

Sid didnt even play on Never mind the bollocks...!!

Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones was asked why he, instead of Vicious, recorded the bass parts of Never Mind the Bollocks, Jones responded, "Sid was in a hospital with hepatitis so he couldn't really play, not that he could play anyway."[13] Sid asked Lemmy, the bassist of Motörhead, to teach him how to play bass with the words, "I can't play bass," to which Lemmy replied "I know." In another interview Lemmy stated, "Yeah. It was all uphill. And he still couldn't play bass when he died."[14]

what a way to be remembered, not for playing bass, but for dying LOL

Sid was and still is the poster boy of punk, but man was he talentless (and ugly). But he had the "dangerous" factor because (like AXL Rose) you never knew what to expect of him and that's what made him so interesting.

In fact, historical fact here, Sid was in the early crowd following the Sex Pistols. He would slam dance harder than every one else. He had the looks of what punk wanted to be. He was hired for the part on this basis. He had never held an instrument in his hand wjen he joined the Pistols.

The Sex Pistols, whether you like it or not, is the first boys band. A pure creation from manager Malcolm McLaren.

Same for Johnny Rotten. He had never sang. He was walking down the street when they asked him if he'd be interested in singing in a band.

                    True story.

All of us older punks see them as pop punk crap, its only scensters/wannabes who think the Sex Pistols are great... the MC5 was more punk than sex pistols ever be. Sex Pistols were about the look and fashion, nothing about being a real punk at all.

But Axl Rose at least can sing and is regarded as one of the best rock frontmen of all time.

Sid Vicious the kid who everyone thought died of a heroin overdose when in fact it turned out his mother killed him. I loved his version of MyWay the best in my opinion but he was pretty fucked up. Has anyone heard of the time he hanged a cat until it shit and piss all over the floor not cool stuff!

I understand your point. And partially agree with it. But we can't underestimate the influence they had in the punk movement. That in itself makes them relevant.

The songs are great. More than these 2.

To interrupt the Queen's jubilee celebration by playing God Save the queen on a rented boat passing in front of the party: priceless! Pure genious IMO.

See, I DO like the Pistols. I like them a lot. I love that era of British punk. However, I do know their story (My first husband was an old punk. So, if I didn't he made sure I found out.) and don't take them for more than what they were.

I disagree that Lydon didn't and doesn't have talent. It just is more in writing than singing. That said, I think his best project was (and is as they are reformed) PIL. PIL was ahead of its time and still sounds good.

Pistols are fine BUT even in the bell curve of Pistols talent, Sid was talentless. He was to them as Bez is to the Happy Mondays - a Mascot.

i'll put my hand up in the minority as well. i don't think sex pistols were exactly great, but for the time, i dig them. super simple music, but i still listen to never mind the... once a year.
we'll miss you our friend. RIP

To interrupt the Queen's jubilee celebration by playing God Save the queen on a rented boat passing in front of the party: priceless! Pure genious IMO.
My first husband was on that boat. There are several clips that get shown whenever that story is remembered and in one of them you can see him getting pulled off the boat. When I first met him , I mentioned this to my mother with pride but she wasn't impressed.

alright time for some real history here-
1)although there were proto punk groups before sex pistols - mc5,stooges and i would say to a large degree jerry lee lewis, The Sex Pistols were the 1st to break it in Britain and were truly PUNK with a capital P.
                                                      Why?
a)crazy heroin addict bass player can't play bass, gets hit in face with bottle, keeps NOT playing with totally bloodied face and LOVING IT
b)the queens jubilee fiasco as Le Coq mentioned, PUNK to the 10th power
c)EMI - McClaren and the pistols ripped off EMI for something like 150k before they even cut a record for them, because they were simply too obnoxious! PUNK!

yes, they were the real deal, although to be accurate The Damned got the first single out before the sex pistols in oct, 1976.

In any case here's to Sid and Boris Karloff hell yes!

Oh, don't start this argument. Then we have to go down the New York Dolls argument path, etc. Then we would have to talk about that 100 Club gig, etc.

What matters is that, firstly, the chaos surrounding the Pistols actually did have a part in changing a society. You only have to be here now to know that if they tried to ban a song from being #1 because it wasn't nice to the Queen it just wouldn't stand. In fact, banning any song just wouldn't stand. There is very much a post-punk era of UK society. Then secondly, that even if you like the Pistols Sid didn't actually contribute anything to their music.

Anyway, on a side note - The Damned's version of Jet Boy Jet Girl is my fave punk song from the era. When I hear the tune (and I know the Belgian version is first and much different - but still sexual - lyrics) used in kid's shoes commercials now I laugh.
