I think I have some weird sleep problem

Im seriously contemplating taking some prescription sleep meds because my schedule is crazy. First, I thought it was due to cutting off caffeine and soda, but I dont think thats it because thats the reason I thought my sleeping patterns were bizarre.

For instance, the last few weeks I have been falling asleep on the couch around 10:30-11:30pm for between 30 to 90 minutes. I wake up, then Im feel like Ive had a full nights sleep and that lasts until about 4am then I crash and then struggle to fall asleep waking up every few minutes.

What I tried to do was go to bed around 11pm/12am, but then I just wake up at 2am and cant fall back asleep. Worst part is I finally am able to get to sleep around 4 to 5am, then its a struggle to get up in the morning... honestly, I do everything to avoid it and will hit the snooze button for an hour, and have to setup a backup alarm because of it.

My gf bitches at me and says I'm lazy, but its not that I don't want to get up in the morning, I physically just can't. This morning for instance, I tried to get up a little earlier to go to the gym and ended up hitting the snooze for an hour, then my backup alarm went off for 30 minutes later until I finally managed to get up because someone was calling me.

Honestly, it sucks and I'm tired all day because of it. Waking up has never been an easy thing for me since high school. I would always be running late and trying to squeeze in an extra few minutes of sleep. Argh, dont know what to do....

Similar thing here. Someone suggested it may be Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I do show many of the symptoms but I haven't followed it up yet.

thats what im afraid of getting back into. i would stay up really late until like 6am, then sleep until 10am, get up and work again until 5am the next day, sleep until 11am, etc. then one day i would fall asleep at like 8pm until 10am the next day.

i never got anything done because i was always scatter brained and thats how I am now. I want to go to bed to try and get up at a decent time but its not going to happen. so instead, ill probably just sit here and pretend to get stuff done and end up watching TV until 5am

I love sleeping pills. Been taking them for years with no side effects except I sleep like a baby every night.

honestly, my biggest concern is dependence. im not one to take pills (except vitamins) as I want to avoid having to spend the rest of my life on medications that may have side effects that we are not aware of yet

when it's time to go to bed (11pm-12am) pop 2 of these http://www.amazon.com/Schiff-Melaton.../dp/B000FCEB2G it just amps up your bodies natural levels of melatonin and won't make you dependent like pharmaceuticals do.

I use to toss and turn for HOURS every night trying to sleep and when I got that shit I was assed out like a champ within 20mins

Try some melatonin before bed as suggested above.

I also suggest trying one of these out: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-goLITE...pr_product_top (read some of the reviews)

You could be suffering from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) caused by the shorter days in the winter.

I've been using the light for a while now, it definitely helped me get back to normal. I was a zombie for about a month - until I tried this.

Melatonin knocks out my lil sis within 15 mins. I might try it. But my problem is that I get into such a deep sleep that you could set off the fucking hiroshima nuke next to my head and I wont even budge. My fiance says it is an hour's job just to get me to respond every day when she tries waking me up at noon or 2pm.

                          Worth a try:
Try doing a workout 1hr-2hrs before sleep.
                          Take Hot shower.
Don't go on the computer then expect to fall asleep after.

Plug in your earphones in your mp3 player listen to ambient music /nature.

Helps me i listen to sleepbot.com / nature sounds radio on shoutcast app for iphone

These steps have helped my sleeping problems

you keep falling asleep on the couch and expect a full nights sleep? Eat right, go to the gym and hit the sack at 11pm with no naps and you'll have np getting a good nights sleep and can get up at 6pm with np. No need for meds...

Do you have a regular schedule? Meaning do you work around the same time every day and do the same stuff at the same time of day every day? The reason I ask is that I have suffered from insomnia most of my adult life. I had pretty much the same problem as you for a long time. I would stay up until 4-5am then sleep until around 11am. I was tired most of the day then around 4pm I would fall asleep for about 45 minutes. At 3am I would be tired and ready for bed then get into bed and be wide awake so I would toss and turn until around 5am. I have finally gotten a hold on it once I was able to define what my trigger was. If you can figure out what triggers your sleep problem you can fix it.

A doctor actually suggested something to me that worked like magic. When I am having a bout of insomnia I change my entire routine. I set the alarm for 7am and get out of bed. I go to the gym right when I wake up, take a shower have breakfast and get busy working by 9am. I force myself to stay awake. I even read different books and listen to different music than I normally would. Do a complete 180 on my normal routine. Then when about 10pm rolls around I'm beat and ready for bed. After 2-3 days of this I am into the new routine and sleeping fine.

I hate getting up early in the morning so eventually I go back to staying up later and getting up later, but as long as I'm not having insomnia issues that is fine. As soon as the insomnia kicks in, I change it up and the problem is solved. I was told that what I am doing is shocking my body with a new routine and that my subconscious is busy adjusting to this new routine so the insomnia is put on the back burner. Maybe there is something to it. Maybe it is all psycho mumbo jumbo, but it has worked for me. Look hard for what the trigger for your sleep problems is and then either fix the problem with the trigger so it doesn't happen (not an option for me) or try changing up your daily routine and see what happens.
