Agreed with MDCQ, Do not go see it unless you go 3D.

But appart from the visual there is no "big deal" of a movie there.

around 1000 people have reported suicidal moods and depressions after seeing the movie. How stupid is that, main reason was that people realized this planet this movie is about is not for real. People are simpletons. Hollywood should fix the climate problems. Perhaps Bruce Willis can do the job.... Oohh wait, Schwarzenegger toke his place already

What's more unique than the actual movie itself is the way the movie was actually crafted. Much of it was done with After Effects in a live environment.

Click http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/production/ to see how Avatar was made.

One word :

Hype

Same reason Twilight etc is huge. Doesn't matter if the film is great. Twilight is appallingly bad. So is New Moon. I've had to watch both. For girlfriend reasons! lol. But seriously. AWFUL movies, but sell hugely.

Well I took my friend and her two kids to go see it for the little nerds B-Day. I really didn't have much interest in seeing it (like most movies) but the whole time there I was thinking what dumb sheep people are lol.

The movie is visually outstanding... The story is stupid, what the whole world created around it is incredible. During the movie I was thinking what kind of minds can create such a beautiful world, from the plants to the animals, everything looks posible and beautiful ate the same time.

The story blows, but if you see it in 3D it's very worth the price of admission. Without the 3D effects, it's just more Hollywood lecturing..

Hey man we cool, I wasnt giving you shit, just answering your question.

Almost everyone I know (personally) that went see this, only went see it "because everyone else is going, lemme go check it out."

I am glad my wife has zero interest in such crap. She watched a UFC marathon with me yesterday and all night LOL

the PR was very good, every TV channel and radio station reported about that movie! It had a huge budget and a famous staff (actors&director etc..)

Bottom line is Cameron will be able to shout out, yet again he's "King of the World" ;-)

Cash Money baby$$$

Also, sooo much merchandising can be done with this movie, probably as much or more as Star Wars did.

It is a pleasant watch and one where the visuals justify leaving the house to see it in the theater.

Why does Avatar's success make people so angry? Lots of movies I'm not especially interested in do good box office and it doesn't make me sit up night gnashing my teeth. I'm not going to go see It's Complicated, but if other people want to, why shouldn't they?

anyway, I thought the movie was good enough to watch until the end. Definitely a lot of better ones in the past years, but it's not terrible, like some claim here.

I'm not angry, just confused. I just didn't get why the movie was so hyped. I didn't find it all that special. Matter of fact I thought it was pretty dumb. Hey whatever floats you boat I guess.

Can you name 10 movies from the last five years you thought were better and worth the extra cost and bother of seeing in the theater vs. at home?

Well ... Perrie does love Twiglets ... but she knows that they're not the best movies ever. Some people I know are SO blinded by the whole lot and it fucking annoys the shit out of me.

Still ... she's hot so it's worth it ;)

I'd like to add ...

Avatar's special effects look like a fucking videogame rendering. The HUGE difference from the live action to the CGI is so apprarent that I'm amazed no one has mentioned it yet. It literally looks like they walked into a videogame. I hate it.

Watch the new Terminator ... and it looks so much more solid visually. Watch Jurassic Park III ... those dinosaurs look pretty much like they should be there.

Avatar? No. Looks awful. I don't think it looks any more visually stunning that a really well done videogame intro... for instance, look at the Final Fantasy 13 intro stuff. Looks immense.

Avatar may be a good film but the special effects really don't look close to real so it lets it down. And yes, I know it's all about 3D, but when it hits bluray no one will have 3D TV's to watch it in 3D. So that's irrelevant.

Oh no doubt they sold a ton. Problem is many of those buyers will not know what to do with it and will freak out when Johnny's birthday party doesn't look like Cameron's efforts. LOL

Love watching that behind the scene stuff. Thanks for that link.
It's funny hearing him say, First thing we did was go out and buy photo shop. As if they didn't already have it.

the planet isnt full of webmasters and designers, what you notice isnt what 99.9% of the planet notices, the avg joe loved every bit of the movie and nothing else matters. Word of mouth was big for this because people liked it.

I prefer the convenience and comfort of TiVo and On-Demand and DVDs too. But Avatar was, for me, an enjoyable watch and visually absolutely worth venturing out for. Even though I sure am used to being able to pause the movie to go pee. I wouldn't have minded an intermission. Then again, although I am a fan of crime flicks, I also like SF in general. For someone not into the science fiction thing, I'd expect it to be a bit dull.

Most of the folks I know IRL are too cool and anti-dork to go, are industry and too competitive with people who worked on it to admit going, or born-wealthy left-identified folks who see red at anything making a profit. I'm really bummed that such a simple pleasure has to be jacked up by this.

You sound like me. I can't even remember the last time I saw a movie at the theater. It's always freezing cold, the sound is too loud, the picture isn't that great, and there's about an 80% chance you'll be surrounded by either obnoxious douchebags or teenagers acting like idiots. Why anyone would prefer that over the comfort of their own home, I never understand. I have friends who go to the movies at least once or twice a week, though.

About ten of my girlfriends stayed online all day to get New Moon tickets and INSISTED that I was going with them to the midnight show. I would have rather blown homeless men on the street corner for free than get in all that mess. They're still bitching at me 2 months later because I wouldn't go.

I went and saw it in 3D New years Day and then went back a few days later and watched it again in IMAX 3D. It was my first 3D movie.

I thought it was really well done and deserves all the rewards it receives.

A few things bothered me though. One was even that far in the future in a time when mankind can travel freely to distant planets people still smoke cigarettes

The other is man's greed will still put the all mighty dollar over life.

I have a friend that is a carpenter and his work often entails a lot of intricate woodworking that is often hidden in the final product. The kind of work that makes him a craftsman at what he does. He told me how his customers never really see or understand just how much work went into getting the job done as they only see the final product and often take his work for granted.

AVATAR is very much like that as many people will never understand just what went into making the movie and how truly revolutionary it is. I do and I find it remarkable.

James Cameron has opened the door to a new world of technology. He developed a camera that he could watch the actors go through their paces and have it render to his CGI world in real time. Imagine the possibilities. We now can put a webcam on us and broadcast our likeness over the internet. In the future Cameron's technology will become mainstream and we will be able to turn the camera on ourselves and project us into programs in real time. TV screens can now be curved. Imagine a TV dome that you stepped inside and became part of a digital environment. It would be awesome for gaming or perhaps you could take virtual trips. The possibilities are wide open because James Cameron and his movie AVATAR has paved the way.

I found the story to be typical however the stunning visuals in 3D more than makes up for it. Add to that the technical aspect and the influence this movie will have on our future and I have no problem calling this one of the greatest movies ever made.

Spoken by a man that actually knows what the hell he is talking about. Entertainment has been kicked up a notch. Mad respect from me.

I hadn't gone to a theater in quite some time before seeing Avatar.

Yes the visuals were good, but the story just sucked ass. Too much blue hippy love and not enough BANG CRASH POW.

I shed a tear when the hero, Colonel Duke Nukem died and cheered to a stunned audience as the hometree came crashing down but other than those few highlights was bored silly for almost 3 hours.
