Wow, there's some seriously high standards in here.

Yes the visuals were good, but the story just sucked ass. Too much blue hippy love and not enough BANG CRASH POW.

I shed a tear when the hero, Colonel Duke Nukem died and cheered to a stunned audience as the hometree came crashing down but other than those few highlights was bored silly for almost 3 hours.

Happy yesterday birthday, princess.

Also while I'm sitting there I looked around at the crowd all wearing them goofy glasses staring at the screen like zombies I couldn't help but think this was some sort of mass brain washing project. There have been people coming forward saying they have been thinking about killing themselves and having feelings of depression after watching this movie.

D Ghost 01-12-2010 12:38 PM

Cutting edge production technology and CGI, better than any other movie ever?

They basically had to invent and create some of the technology they used to even make the movie look like that... been in development for a decade.

That might be one reason ;)

Because they are comparing their boring life on earth to living in a fantasy land in blue world pandora...

it's bullshit those people were already clinically depressed if they wanted to kill themselves..

such bulshit:2 cents:

Why does Avatar's success make people so angry? Lots of movies I'm not especially interested in do good box office and it doesn't make me sit up night gnashing my teeth. I'm not going to go see It's Complicated, but if other people want to, why shouldn't they?

People don't like to see success. This guy has hit the jackpot twice and now it might be he is smart not just lucky. People don't like that.

Those " goofy " glasses are meant to be functional not stylish. BTW mine were black wrap around that did an excellent job.

The reason everyone was " staring at the screen like zombies " is because they were fully engrossed in the movie. That's a good thing. If people were talking and looking around and playing with themselves that means the movie didn't hold their attention. That's a bad thing.

Like I said I was a little bummed to see that people so far in the future still had the destructive habits that plague us today. It's a little disheartening to think that life doesn't get better in the future and we can't learn from our mistakes and are destined to repeat them.

However, I KNOW this is just a story and can shrug it off. I'm sure other people with weaker minds will have problems differentiating between fantasy and reality just as some do with everyday life today. One would hope there would be an answer for that as well in the future.

Nothing's wrong with not liking the movie. To each his own but to bash it and say it sucked says more about you than the movie.

czarina 01-12-2010 01:16 PM

I loved the movie; watched it twice. No mob mentality, since I went to see it on opening day. I still LOVED it!

Agent 488 01-12-2010 01:16 PM

15 suicides have been connected to this movie.

looks like something i would have liked when i was 6 btw.

CDSmith 01-12-2010 01:20 PM

I'll see it.

(probably next year when it comes out on Movie Central) :D

I am the master of delayed gratification.

That's very true and the reason why I've posted such lengthy responses. It says a lot about me and helps people form their opinion of me :thumbsup

It's all good. I started the thread for fun. At the same time I didn't understand all the hype around the movie. Wasn't that good imho. If you liked it that's fine. Just bustin balls. Movies these days can have all the special effects in the world and for me it still doesn't beat Clint Eastwood telling the bad guys they better apologise to his horse. :)

You copied and pasted that from Rotten Tomatoes, didn't you?

Zester 01-12-2010 02:25 PM

it would be better if they cut the length in half
after 2 hours I started getting a headache from the glasses

I for one think the 3D was not that good and the story was ok (not bad)
I don't regret seeing it even though it is very hard to take me out to the movies, my girl had to drag me by the balls this time

qwe 01-12-2010 02:29 PM

it was cool with 3d glasses, but after an hour I was dieing there, i knew i wouldn't like it but my girl dragged me there.... had to take it like a man lol

Ayla_SquareTurtle 01-12-2010 02:31 PM

The first time I saw a commercial for it I thought it was a video game, so that kind of sealed the deal for me on not seeing it.

It's all good. Lately I've been catching up on all the old movies I missed when I was younger and out partying instead of watching movies. The other day I bought " Jeremiah Johnson " on DVD. Going to watch " The Bridge on the River Kwai " on TCM tomorrow night. Recently saw " Papillon ". Still have the Rocky movies to go through and strangely I've never watched an older Clint Eastwood movie all the way through but have them on my list.

cambaby 01-12-2010 03:24 PM

This movie did not impress me at all, the plot was very simplistic and minimal. This movie was made for the Generation Y (aka the selfish-feed-me-now-instant-gratification-lack-of-intelligence-no-morality generation).

It was bound to be big, throw some fucking plastic glasses on these dumb fuckers, show them uber computer graphics and show them a storyline written for pre-schoolers. PROFIT!

The Demon 01-12-2010 04:19 PM

For all of complaining about the simplicity of the storyline, yea, the story WAS supposed to be simple. That was the point. However, it was a VERY good storyline, regardless of simplicity or alleged originality (if you want to completely generalize good vs. evil). And the fact that the graphics were there, it made the movie absolutely unbelievable. I don't doubt it will beat Titanic, and I'm thrilled that internet piracy did absolutely nothing to this movie. James Cameron is one hell of a visionary.

JadaY 01-12-2010 04:29 PM

Movie is for kids and the storyline is uber lame.

But i liked the visual effects.

Ha ha at the people who think Avatar is 'terrible'. It's one of the most elaborate and beautiful pieces of artwork that exists, can you not at least appreciate that much? The story was nothing new, but it was solid and entertaining. All of the acting was fucking top notch too.

You can't compare this to such bullshit as Twilight, that movie is not even in the same ballpark. That is like comparing Michael Jackson to Hannah Montana.

The herd mentality of the naysayers and especially those who 'won't ever watch it' is even worse than the sheep who do.

Amen to that. Twilight is an example of the downfall of American society. We need to shoot the new generation of teenagers because they are beyond incompetent. Too much technology and social networks have made them stupid.

Comparing Michael Jackson to Hannah Montana?!? :helpme

Let's see, MJ wanted to be a skinny white girl, and Hannah Montana wanted to be a lip-synching dancing pop star - I can see the similarities... :upsidedow

That's because half of these guys have no clue what it takes to create stunning visuals. Fuck, one look at the content most of them shoot shows they have no fucking clue about drawing the viewer in so why would you expect them to appreciate brilliance that made billions. Not one of those that don't appreciate the visual artistry has made even 1/10 of what Avatar made in the box office. Oh yeah, we haven't even seen what it will end up selling on DVD/Blu Ray yet. They are just a bunch of fucking haters.

bronco67 01-12-2010 05:17 PM

List some movies that you think are at your level of taste, then we'll know if you're a genius or just a hater.

Agent 488 01-12-2010 05:21 PM

people that think avatar is great simply have no taste.

have zero knowledge appreciation if literature, film, philosophy etc.

sure someone that has spent their whole life life is in cave is going to think a ray of light is the most profound experience ever, but those outside the cave have finer sensibilities of light. sorry.

And what have you produced that brought in a 1/10 of what Avatar did? Matter of fact, what have you done ever that was worth something besides being a classic asshole on every single thread?

daniel_webcams 01-13-2010 05:13 AM

probably because of the graphics, I love the way was made this movie...

KILL_FRENZY 01-13-2010 07:38 AM

It's all the clichés, they sell. And the graphic is cool..

Twilight & Recent Moon or whatever = grotesque clichés and fearfully stupid predictable characters in a forest. Yet they have mobs of fans...

biskoppen 01-13-2010 07:43 AM

Cameron is probably greatfull that its the average human being who decides if his movies are a success or not - and not the macho-wanna-be who's afraid to admit that Titanic was a fucking great movie - even with the love story and all.
