The treatment of gays on conservative forums

For those of you who don't care, please just move on to the next 'would you hot it' thread, but if you are concerned with homophobia of the far right, this might interest you. I posted to a forum I have been banned from several times under a new nick and with a contrived identity, as an older gay church attending man. As you can see, I was polite and offered to debate and play nice, and immediately I was denounced as a wicked and evil piece of shit. If you want a good reason why we should eliminate religion from the face of the earth, this would be it.

NOTE for those of you who are inclined to reply with a claim that I am no different than they are because I want to rid the world of Christians, please keep in mind that it is not people I want to eradicate, but the philosophy of hate and intolerance and the things that are used to justify it, like organized religion. I am not so naive as to believe that eliminating religion would eliminate hate and intolerance, but it's at least a good start.

The problem with quoting anti-gay statements from the Bible is that they are in relation to laws and customs of that time period.

Even the statements attributed as being directly from God seem to fall under that if you read the context they are being made in (and that may involve having to read the whole chapter).

These people pick and choose isolated anti-gay verses to get their point across.

Maybe I shouldn't be so obsessed with these people, but the Terri Schiavo incident woke me up to the power they had harnessed. They were able to get congress involved in what should have been a private matter. That particular site was extremely pro-Schiavo. It use to be a ground roots site for Alan Keyes and his movement to renew America by bringing it back into the dark ages. The right is very organized and the average conservative is much more likely to vote than the average liberal. That scares me.

Here is a post from another thread. A guy who never participates in the forums and only posts links to updates on he seriously wacked website. This particular link promotes an article that deals with Holocaust denial, a topic on which he has dealt before, and NOBODY on that forum has ever said a single word to him about it. I have numerous times, and only ever get denounced as a perverted lefty.

I understand where some of you are coming from, but as evil as organized religion can be faith can also be a very positive force.

I am 100% for a further separation of church and state, I hate how the "moral majority" and the christian coalition seem to still have such strong pull on our legislature. But as mad as they make me, I wouldn't consider myself anti religion.

Denying the holocaust is not a crime in America, nor will it ever be. Freedom of thought and Speech is what makes us a civilized society. While we may not enjoy the message the Deniers promote, soldiers defend that freedom daily (at least they want you to think they do)

It isn't organized religion that has the positive effect. It is the personal belief in a higher power, which I have no problem with whatsoever. I am a theist myself, but my concept of God is not based on some outdated racist book of fairy-tales that tells me to shove my religion down the throats of others. My problem is with the ignorance of people who on the one hand say that the theory of evolution is a ridiculous, unproven, unlikely theory, and on the other have no problem believing that Eve was magically created when God took one of Adam's ribs. That is just stupidity on a level that is simply inexcusable. But that isn't what really bothers me. It is the way that these fools have been duped into a political ideology by people looking to control others. Outside of government, there is no institution the controls people like religion. The way of life in countries like Iran and Afghanistan should be more sobering to Americans. Iran was a secular state until radicals decided to speak for everyone and overthrow the Shaw. In the USA, religious conservatives are FAR MORE involved in the political process and are systematically looking to dismantle secular government and force a religious theocracy on everyone. They are fond of calling Muslims brutal beasts, but do you honestly think they would be any better? Many within that movement advocate the execution of abortion doctors and unrepentant homosexuals.

Which is precisely why anti-vilification laws are a good thing. We have implied freedom of speech in the Australian constitution, but we as a society also understand that it's not a thing to be abused. So while I can say quite freely all Mormons are fruitcakes, I can't use speech that is likely to cause those people harm.

Iran today is run similarly to how Catholic countries ran in the middle ages, most large issues went through Rome and the Pope had final say over legislative matters much as the Ayatollah runs things now. It's refreshing to see some push back to this form of leadership. I follow this all the time and hope that they will finally see change.

But back on the religious tip, ALL religions have extremeists. Muslims are no more brutal than catholics, they both have committed genocide in the name of their god, they both have sects that self mutilate, flagillate, etc.

There will also always be a need for organized religion. Similar to how some people sign up for the service, there are individuals that need structure in their life. As incomprehesable as that may sound to some of us, there are people that require someone else telling them what to do and how to live to survive. Religion keeps people in check, it gives them something to look to, it gives them guidance and something to do. Just as some people are born leaders some people are born followers.

What is noteworthy about this remark is that the person who made it is a candidate for the state senate in the Illinois. unfortunately, a lot of people grew up going to church with family, it's a big part of their life and changing what the church has been telling them what is wrong and what is right is an uphill battle, no different is the radical extremist, just can't change their minds.

There is nothing abnormal about homosexuality. It is a natural thing that happens amongst our species and countless others. What I would consider bizarre behavior is believing in fairy tales written 2,000 years ago about a guy who walked on water and was born to a virgin.
