I picked up one about two months ago for $30. I really want a blu-ray, but for some reason I cannot justify spending $120-180 on a friggin dvd player! It's not like it's that much money, but I'm sorry a dvd player shouldn't cost that much. I'd feel like I was being raped if I actually bought one.

Man i'm getting tired of always having to upgrade my collection... i'm betting once I got my Blu-Ray collection together, something new and improved will come along and replace it.

Ok...you guys realize that upconverting video is a scam and BS, right?

You cannot upgrade a graphics source. It is what it is, doesn't matter what crap they sell you.

As for anyone who thinks the price of Blu Ray is not justified -- then you just haven't seen it in all its glory.

We love the blue ray however it is way slower than a regular dvd player, is very picky about what it will play apart from blue ray like it wont play "backed up" movies on dvd-r disks... I have also updated the firmware twice which has made it slightly quicker..

I would not use a blue ray player as my main dvd player when the up-convertors are so cheep these days.

I believe our blue ray player cost like $350 a couple of years ago...

Did you ever see an Oppo upconverting DVD player right besides a regular Philips or Samsung crap player? (no upconversion)

              You'll be blown away

A good upconverting DVD player does matter (ALOT).

(still, it's worse than bluray, offcourse)

I think it's Warner Bros. who is upgrading your DVDs to Bluray for like $5 shipping and handling. They have a decent library of titles you can upgrade too.

                  Spend you some brain.

DVD and Bluray are so 2000's. You guys need a media player like the Asus Oplay.

What's the difference between seeing a broadcast/ppv at 1080i compared to a BluRay at 1080i? Nothing, because 1080i is 1080i.

All I watch is HD, and I'm saying - the price for bluray is not justified. I'd rather just rent an hd movie off on-demand instead or watch a non hd movie upconverted.

You're partly right, except for one variable....

The signal that comes thru your TV screen is compressed way more than Blu Ray disc, so you see lots of artifacts(not 100% of the time) and color banding.

When the transfer of a Blu Ray is done well, nothing can top the deep blacks and super clear picture. TV has to compress the shit out of everything it sends.

yup, broadcast signal is lower bitrate than bluerays...

ESPN is one of the few cable channels that's not compressed... In any way, shape of form

because blueray is 1080P not 1080I, however some ppv movies off dish network are 1080P I believe.
