:mad Can't stand working with "non internet" people

I've been working on a project for a while now with this guy that I met through a friend and I'm beginning to think of just pulling the plug on it and scratching it off as a lesson learned. The problem is he has NO clue how anything internet related works what so ever.

We've spend thousands in programming and development and I keep telling him that things take time to get done and give him ETAs from programmers, but still continues to say "I dont understand why this cant be done in 5 minutes, looks like a 5 minute job."

Just got off a call with him this morning and I think I'm at my wits end and thinking of drafting up a letter saying im pulling the plug. worst part is this guy does NOTHING so all day I get emails and phone calls about things that he thinks about or "hey check out this site, we should do this."

My ... never work with people who do not have the same or at least somewhat close to knowledge that you have about projects or it will be a complete nightmare.

Here is one example from when I talked to him last week... He wants to get someone to scrape all the pages on yellowpages.com and get their email address then "market" to them... I told him this is spamming and is not allowed then had a 20 minute argument with him about it and still does not understand how that is spamming

only problem is there is a contract between us, so if we split we somehow have to divide up the equity in the company (which is only technology). The only reason why i even worked with him was because he has a lot of networking connects and owns a web design company (have no clue how he owns it and has no clue about shit) who is the perfect target audiance

we're having an issue with a client now, who has changed her mind a million times; we keep telling her that she has to stick to what she originally approved but she's just clueless.

It's better to work with people who are more knowledgeable about the internet.

You run into the same problems when having a partner in general, it's not just the Internet. Partners = no good.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.

Pretty hard to deal with and it costs more nerves than time.

It's not a matter of "non internet people" but I guess it's also a matter of common sense and any piece of technical thinking left.

Have you tried to use a development framework like SCRUM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrum_(development) ?

We have made alot of projects with non-internet guys and gals, and SCRUM have really help streamline all processes - including changes

Actually I have. I worked with some really smart guys years ago who used this for every project they did. although it seemed a bit of a pain in the ass, really paid off at the end to get stuff on time.

problem with this guy it seems like every other day there is a new URGENT issue that needs to be addressed, or a color needs to be changed on the site, etc.

Yep. This is a common misunderstanding with non-internet, and beer money barons of this industry. They do not understand that one... a good programmer is not just sitting around twiddling their thumbs. Nor are most designers. You have to BOOK in ADVANCE!!

Then they do not understand the initial draft, then the revisions, and so on before final presentation. Nor do them understand that design is ONE part, and INTEGRATION is ANOTHER part. Or that not all designers do both, and there could be additional charges cutting their Paki/Indian/Houdini designer mofo's garbage into CSS HTML.

This does not even get into the other pieces needed to actually just get a good, working, website online in the first place before actually turning the lights on with processing, and sales or traffic and whatever.

If it were easy. Everyone would, and could, do it.

Learn to say no and only answer his inquiries at specific times. Example: you only take phone calls and e-mail between 3 and 4 p.m.. Problem solved.

i wish. he is one of those annoying people that will call you 2 or 3 times in a row, then send a text message, then an email, then call back again.

he actually looked up the whois from one of my domains and called my fax machine

honestly, i can only see things probably getting worse and sadly I feel that I'm going to have to pull the plug on it which sucks. so much time and effort to let it go to waste but I cant afford to spend 2-3 hours per day responding to emails and project managing all this stuff, let alone working with designers and programmers to get it finished... at this rate it will never yield a positive ROI for me
