AT&T may be blocking New Yorkers from ordering iPhones online

AT&T dancing around mysterious New York iPhone issue

AT&T is currently blocking customers in the New York area from ordering an iPhone online, with AT&T customer service reps saying that the network can't "handle" the iPhone. AT&T's PR people, for their part, aren't doing much to help explain the issue.

AT&T is such as joke. I'm honestly surprised they have not been sued yet. My phone service is great in smaller towns, but when I got into Philly, NYC or LA its almost impossible to get anything done.

I wont even get calls, just mysteriously 15 minutes later I will get a "beep" showing me I have a voicemail, but never received a call.

Its a shame that I have to pay an additional $60/mo for a "backup" phone when traveling because of the shitty service that AT&T has.

BTW, they are definitely NOT the fastest 3G... I have both the mifi and at&t usb card and everywhere I tested, Verizon can download faster ONLY when I'm in an area that Verizon does not have 3G coverage and AT&T does

Seems every week or so there is a new indicator that the iphone is just pounding their network into the ground.

All I have to say is AT&T's bundling is a joke. I have home phone, tv and internet with them (all of which work pretty well) and recently had to get a new cell phone, so was going to bundle their cell service in with what I had thinking I'd get a discount, called them up and nope, no discount for doing that. But oh, if I get a $60+/mo cell plan, my calls to landline/business AT&T phones won't use up my minutes. Because yea, I really wanted to get a $60/mo plan or call landline/business phones all day on my cell phone. The only reason AT&T is competing at all in cellular is the iPhone. Without that, they'd have been left in the dust a long time ago.

This IMO is the most awesome hitjob done on any product by a competitor.

The real reason seams to be people ordering the phone, and not setting them up from those two zip codes in New York via At&T.

All you need to do is order an iphone and ship it New Jersey or Brooklyn and you will recieve one.

NEW YORK - AT&T is resuming online sales of iPhones to New Yorkers after suspending them over the weekend for unclear reasons.

A spokesman said only that the phone company periodically "modifies" its distribution channels.

On AT&T Inc.'s Web site, buyers who supply New York City ZIP codes were told on Monday morning to "Please shop for another phone."

AT&T has acknowledged that its data network is overburdened with iPhone users in New York and San Francisco, sparking online speculation that the sales suspension is a means of managing traffic.

However, because the phones are still available in New York retail stores and from Apple Inc.'s Web site, the ban could instead be a way to curb fraudsters who buy phones and sell them on, reneging on the service contracts.
They changed their tune pretty quick
