We are planning on making Munich our summer vacation destination this year. I am trying to decide on hotels, etc. Anybody from the area or know it well?

I stay at the Mercure Altstadt...
Plus points: Great City Centre Location, Friendly Staff, Reasonably Priced.
Minus Points: Rooms are quite small.

That is one of the ones on my short list. How close is it in walking distance to the Marienplatz and/or Viktualienmarkt? I see the maps but it is hard to know what those distances are in real terms.Comment

100m to Kaufingerstrasse - main shopping street (pedestrianised) chain stores, department stores & Bierkellers
200m to nearest underground to and from airport
400m to Marienplatz
500 - 600m to Viktualienmarkt (depending on your choice of route).
The streets around the hotel are safe, have some great restaurants, bars and little shops.Comment
